James Earl Jones’s most memorable Darth Vader lines
Lucasfilm says Jones was cast to perform Vader’s voice in Star Wars: A New Hope in early 1977, and that he lent his voice to the role for more than four decades. The quotes below are attributed to Vader by official Star Wars sources; Lucasfilm’s tribute explicitly connects Jones’s performance to the father reveal, but does not separately document his recording of every line in this selection.
“No, I am your father.” — The Empire Strikes Back
This is the defining Vader line: a revelation that changes Luke Skywalker’s understanding of his family and the conflict. Lucasfilm’s tribute quotes Jones speaking the full sentence, “No, I am your father,” and calls it one of the most iconic lines in motion-picture history. The Darth Vader databank displays the shorter form, “I am your father.” That shortened wording is also common shorthand, but the full version is the wording Lucasfilm attributes to Jones.
“Impressive. Most impressive.” — The Empire Strikes Back
Vader says this after Luke resists him. The line turns a moment of surprise into a measured assessment: Vader recognizes Luke’s ability without losing his own air of control. It appears in StarWars.com’s 40-line feature for the film’s 40th anniversary.

“All too easy.” — The Empire Strikes Back
Vader’s brief remark conveys dismissive confidence as he faces Luke. The same official anniversary feature includes it among the film’s memorable quotes.
“You’re a part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor. Take her away!” — A New Hope
Vader delivers this accusation and command after Leia is captured. It establishes him as both an enforcer of Imperial authority and a direct threat to the Rebels. The official databank attributes the line to Vader in A New Hope.

“The Emperor will show you the true nature of the Force.” — Return of the Jedi
Here Vader invokes the Emperor’s power while attempting to draw Luke toward the dark side. The line points to the larger struggle over the Force and Luke’s choices. It is listed as a Vader quote from Return of the Jedi in the official databank.
Why the father reveal’s wording matters
“Luke, I am your father” is a familiar paraphrase, not the wording Lucasfilm quotes Jones performing. The complete line is “No, I am your father.” The databank’s shorter display form, “I am your father,” explains why both versions appear in official material, but it does not include the opening “No.”

The reveal was also protected as a production secret. In a StarWars.com interview with George Lucas, Mark Hamill recalls that the script version he saw said, “You don’t know the truth. Obi-Wan killed your father,” and that director Irvin Kershner told him about the alternate reveal just before filming. Lucas describes only a small group knowing the twist before audiences saw it. Weeks later, Jones recited “No, I am your father” in a recording booth. The earlier script line, the scene’s reveal, and Jones’s recorded delivery are distinct moments in that account.

Lucasfilm describes Jones’s resonant bass register as well suited to Vader. Jones said he kept the performance tightly controlled: “The technique about recording that voice was to keep it within very strict boundaries of inflection, and there was no way to enlighten the voice with awareness.” He also explained, “In fact, my job was to keep awareness out of Darth Vader’s voice – take all the humanity out of it.”

Vader’s screen presence was collaborative, not the work of the voice alone. Jones credited David Prowse, who physically portrayed Vader, saying, “David Prowse worked very hard to create Darth Vader…I take no credit for the character.” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy praised the “menacing baritone” Jones brought to the role, while George Lucas remembered him as “a beautiful human being.”
