James Henry Sproule Cousins moved from Belfast’s Irish literary circles to India in 1915, where his work ranged from editing and education to public art institutions. He became part of India’s cultural life through specific relationships and projects—not as its sole architect, and not as a voice for all Irish or Indian experience.

Who was James Cousins?

Born in Belfast on 22 July 1873, Cousins was educated there before moving to Dublin, where he taught English and developed as a poet and playwright. His early life and writing belonged to the Irish literary and cultural revival, with an interest in Irish and Celtic folklore.

His first poetry collection, Ben Madighan and Other Poems, appeared in 1894, according to Scroll’s 2022 feature. The Dictionary of Ulster Biography records plays including The Sleep of the King and The Racing Lug, staged in 1902, as well as later collections and essays. The sources use differing styling for the early collection; the title here follows Scroll.

Why did James Cousins move to India?

In 1915, Cousins went to Madras to become literary sub-editor of Annie Besant’s newspaper, New India. His move put him to work in a setting that combined journalism, education and Theosophy. The Theosophical Encyclopedia also records his Theosophical Society and academic roles, including service on the University of Madras Senate.

Education and Theosophical work at Madanapalle

The Dictionary of Ulster Biography says Cousins was involved with the Theosophical College at Madanapalle for the next 22 years and served as its principal. This long institutional role was a central part of his life in India, alongside his writing and editorial work.

What did Cousins contribute to Indian art?

Biographical accounts credit Cousins with helping establish public art galleries in Mysore and Travancore. Scroll’s 2022 feature, citing Irish academic Frances Clarke’s Dictionary of Irish Biography entry, gives the opening dates: the Mysore gallery opened in 1924, followed by a gallery in Travancore in 1935.

Institution or role Reported date and contribution
Mysore public art gallery Opened in 1924; Scroll’s 2022 feature attributes the date and Cousins’s role to Frances Clarke’s biographical entry.
Travancore public art gallery Opened in 1935; Scroll’s 2022 feature attributes the date and Cousins’s role to Frances Clarke’s biographical entry.
Travancore arts adviser Scroll reports that Cousins began a ten-year, full-time appointment for the Travancore government in 1938, citing Frances Clarke’s biographical entry.

The Dictionary of Ulster Biography also credits him with establishing the first public art galleries in Mysore and Travancore and says that from 1938 he worked for the Indian government in arts-advisory capacities. These accounts describe the work credited to Cousins; they do not establish that he acted alone in creating either institution.

How did Cousins influence Kannada literature?

One specific literary connection concerns the Kannada writer Kuvempu. Scroll reports, attributing the account to academic Chandan Gowda, that the young Kuvempu showed Cousins poems in English and was encouraged to write in Kannada instead. The feature says Kuvempu later prioritized Kannada and eventually switched entirely to it.

This is a reported moment of encouragement, not evidence that Cousins alone determined Kuvempu’s language or career. It illustrates one way a relationship across literary traditions could matter without reducing either writer’s work to the other’s influence.

What relationships shaped his life in India?

Scroll describes Cousins’s connections with Rabindranath Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, the Travancore royal family and the Roerich family, as well as his travels within India. It reports that he formally embraced Hinduism in 1937. These details speak to the range of his personal and professional engagement; they should not be treated as evidence that he represented Indian society as a whole.

In his 1918 book The Renaissance in India, Cousins wrote: “I had thought of her philosophical certainties as of a house of rock in which the fuss and speculation of the West would find understanding and repose.” Scroll quotes the passage as Cousins’s own reflection. It offers a window into how he viewed India, rather than an objective description of the country or a summary of Indian thought.

What did James and Margaret Cousins write together?

James Cousins and his wife Margaret wrote the joint autobiography We Two Together, identified by both the Dictionary of Ulster Biography and Scroll. Scroll describes it as an account of their travels and activities and reports that it runs to more than 800 pages; the edition behind that length is not specified. It is a potential source for readers interested in their first-person account, but current editions and availability have not been verified.

How should Cousins’s legacy be understood?

Cousins’s life connected Irish writing and theatre with Indian journalism, education, Theosophical institutions and public arts work. His career is most clearly understood through those documented activities and particular relationships, including the reported encouragement he gave Kuvempu. The accounts support a story of sustained participation in Indian cultural life, not a claim that one person created a cultural bridge by himself.

Cousins died on 20 February 1956, according to the Dictionary of Ulster Biography. His journey from Belfast to India was unusually wide-ranging, but it remains one individual’s experience—not a stand-in for the many perspectives within either country.
