Ahmed Best voiced Jar Jar Binks as a Sith Master in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, giving the long-running Darth Jar Jar theory an official on-screen interpretation. But StarWars.com describes the role as an alternative version in “a very different context”; its interview does not establish that Darth Jar Jar is part of the main Star Wars continuity.
What Ahmed Best did as Darth Jar Jar
In LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Best returned to voice Jar Jar as a Sith Master. In a September 20, 2024 interview with StarWars.com, Best said he wanted to play a darker Jar Jar while retaining flashes of the character’s familiar levity and joy.
Best also said he had long liked the Darth Jar Jar theory and wanted to explore it “in one way, shape, or form.” That makes the series’ Sith version an intentional nod to the fan theory. It does not show that Jar Jar was secretly intended to be a Sith in The Phantom Menace.
Does this make the theory canon?
It depends on what “canon” means in the question. Darth Jar Jar has appeared in an official Star Wars screen production, voiced by the actor who originated the character. But the StarWars.com interview calls this an alternative Jar Jar in “a very different context” and does not specify the series’ formal status relative to the main Star Wars continuity.

Why Ahmed Best’s return matters
Best’s connection to Jar Jar goes back to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, released May 19, 1999, which opened the prequel trilogy. StarWars.com’s oral history of the film identifies Jar Jar as a major computer-generated character. In a 2024 interview, Best recalled screen-testing for the role and described the character’s creation as a collaboration involving his physical performance, George Lucas, and Industrial Light & Magic. Best provided both Jar Jar’s performance and voice.
