Produced by his longtime musical collaborator Margo Price, the nine-song record marked a step forward for an artist who had spent years performing alongside her.
What is The Dream and the Dreamer?
The Dream and the Dreamer is Ivey’s first solo album. ANTI-/Epitaph released it on September 13, 2019, after announcing it that July. The label lists Reel Recording in Nashville, Tennessee, as the recording studio and Margo Price as producer. The record has nine songs. How did Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey work together?
Ivey and Price’s partnership predates his solo debut. They performed together in Buffalo Clover, and Ivey also played guitar and served as Price’s sideman for several years, according to Apple Music’s artist biography. ANTI- says Ivey also performed in Secret Handshake. GRAMMY.com’s 2020 profile of Price identifies Ivey as her husband and fellow musician and collaborator.
What does the album sound like, and what is it about?
ANTI- describes the album as “homespun” and “deeply introspective,” with a generally up-tempo exterior that contrasts with concerns including the news cycle and Manifest Destiny. Those are the label’s characterizations, rather than an independent critical assessment. In its announcement, ANTI- also named the Beatles, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan as influences.

The announcement highlights “Diamonds Back To Coal” as a response to the daily news stream. Ivey described the modern newsreel appearing in people’s feeds as “beyond insane” and “surreal.” His comment, as published by ANTI-, gives a direct glimpse of the album’s engagement with contemporary events.
Why was the solo debut significant for Ivey?
Before releasing the album under his own name, Ivey had often worked in the background as a bandmate and collaborator. ANTI- framed the record as a move into a solo career. Its 2019 biography describes his songwriting as drawing on classic folk, gently frayed psychedelia, pop, Southern rock, and Americana; that genre range is the label’s framing, not a formal classification.

Ivey put the ambition behind the step plainly: “I want to prove that you can be in your 40s and be at the peak of your creativity,” he said in ANTI-’s release materials. The statement casts the debut not simply as a change in billing, but as an assertion about creative possibility later in life.
