Their statements remembered her courage, musicianship and influence on people living with mental-health conditions. Joan had three children with Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy; their daughter Kara died in 2011, so Ted Jr. and Patrick were her surviving children.
What Ted Kennedy Jr. and Patrick Kennedy said
Ted Kennedy Jr. recalled how his mother met difficulties and the lessons she passed on to him. “I will always admire my mother for the way that she faced up to her challenges with grace, courage, humility, and honesty,” he said. He also credited her with teaching him “how to be more truthful with myself and how careful listening is a more powerful communication skill than public speaking.”

Patrick Kennedy described Joan as a loving mother and talented musician, as well as a partner in his father’s early political career. He said she “was a power of example to millions of people with mental health conditions.” He added that she would be missed by the Kennedy family, Boston’s arts community and the many people whose lives she touched. Who Joan Kennedy was beyond her marriage
Joan was a classically trained pianist and music teacher whose public life also included advocacy for mental-health and addiction services. She was married to Senator Ted Kennedy for 24 years and had three children with him: Kara, Ted Jr. and Patrick. Her sons’ tributes reflected both personal memories and the causes and arts communities with which she was associated. The Kennedy Forum

Kara Kennedy, the couple’s daughter, died in 2011. The two sons were therefore the surviving children named in coverage of Joan’s death. A remembrance of Joan can acknowledge her health challenges without making them the whole story: her sons also emphasized her honesty, musical talent, family role and impact on others.
