Yes. The Associated Press reported on March 31, 2025, that Jack Black played Minecraft for more than 100 hours while on the set of A Minecraft Movie. The report gives no more precise total. Black had also played the game occasionally with his sons before taking the role of Steve.
When and why Black started playing Minecraft
Black told the Associated Press that he had played Minecraft with his sons while preparing for the film: “My boys were playing it, and I wanted to speak their language.” AP reported that he then spent over 100 hours playing during production. That figure is a reported threshold, not an exact playtime or a claim that he reached a particular milestone in the game.

To prepare, Black watched YouTube videos about surviving the first night in the Overworld. AP quoted him saying, “I put the work in,” and, “I was pretty versed in it.” The account describes preparation for the role, not a formal studio requirement.
What Black played on set
In a March 20, 2025 report on a Variety interview with Mojang senior director Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Windows Central said Xbox consoles and private Minecraft servers were available to the cast and crew. Ólafsson described Black as the most passionate player on set, gathering resources in mines and searching for lapis lazuli. He said Black liked the way the mineral’s name sounded.

Ólafsson also said Black was initially intended for a talking-pig role before being switched to Steve late in development because the filmmakers wanted an expert and host. That casting account comes from Ólafsson as reported by Windows Central, rather than from Black himself. Ólafsson summed up the character’s interpretation this way: “This is not my Steve or your Steve — this is Jack Black’s Steve.”
The reports identify Xbox consoles and Minecraft generally, but do not specify the console model or which game edition Black used.

- Context, not separate eyewitness confirmation: Windows Central and Insider Gaming both recount the Variety interview with Ólafsson. Their accounts add production details, but they are not independent first-hand confirmations of the playtime figure.
AP’s March 31, 2025 story describes Minecraft as an open-ended game with survival, mining, farming, building, and multiplayer play. It reported that the game had reached a million players within two years of its 2009 release and had sold over 235 million copies across platforms. Those are figures published in that 2025 report, not a current 2026 sales count.
