Tenacious D faced criticism after Kyle Gass joked about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump during a July 14, 2024, concert in Sydney. Gass apologized; Jack Black said he was blindsided, canceled the rest of the tour and paused future creative plans. The two later said their friendship had recovered, but as of October 8, 2026, the band’s official tour page listed no upcoming dates.
What Kyle Gass said at the Sydney concert
On July 14, 2024, Jack Black sang “Happy Birthday” to bandmate Kyle Gass during a Tenacious D show in Sydney, then invited him to make a wish. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” It was an apparent reference to the shooting at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the day before.
The July 13 attack killed one person and injured multiple others, including Trump. Gass’s remark came as the attempted assassination was still fresh news; it was not a comment about a separate event.
How Gass and Black responded
Gass apologized
On July 16, Gass called the improvised line “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake.” His apology characterized the remark as a mistake; public reporting does not establish private intent beyond what he said.

Black canceled the remaining tour
Black said he had been blindsided by the comment and would not condone hate speech or political violence. He said it was no longer appropriate to continue the tour and that all future creative plans were on hold. The cancellation was Black’s announced response; it did not mean the band had permanently disbanded.
Political reaction in Australia
Australian senator Ralph Babet called for Tenacious D to be removed from Australia and for the members’ visas to be revoked. That was Babet’s demand, not evidence that the government deported the band. Babet also characterized Gass as “deadly serious” in wishing for Trump’s death; that was the senator’s interpretation, not an independently established finding about Gass’s intent.

Did Tenacious D make up and plan a return?
In August 2024, Black told reporters that the band would be back when the time felt right and said his friendship with Gass had not changed. In January 2026 interviews, Gass said the two had talked through their disagreement and that their friendship was restored. He said Tenacious D would return, but did not announce a date or schedule.

As of October 8, 2026, Tenacious D’s official tour page listed no upcoming dates; Ticketmaster also showed no upcoming concerts. Those listings are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of future availability. Gass’s comments about returning therefore did not amount to an announced reunion tour.
