That distinction matters: Caroline and John Jr. were the couple’s two children who survived infancy and grew up in the family. Patrick was also their child, though he did not grow up alongside them.

John F. Kennedy Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., on November 25, 1960, three weeks after his father was elected president, according to a U.S. Senate memorial tribute. He was Caroline’s younger brother.
The press popularized the childhood nickname “John-John.” The congressional memorial tribute says his parents called him John.
What happened to JFK’s son Patrick?
Patrick Bouvier Kennedy was born on August 7, 1963. The JFK Presidential Library and Museum says he suffered from a serious lung ailment and died two days later. He was the youngest of the couple’s three children.
What was it like for Caroline and John Jr. to grow up in the White House?
Jacqueline Kennedy made her children’s welfare a priority. The JFK Presidential Library and Museum describes a White House childhood that included a kindergarten in the sun porch, a swimming pool, a swing set, and a tree house for Caroline and John Jr.
