“I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish,” Watson said. She added that she hoped people who disagreed with her would love her, and that she could continue loving people whose opinions she did not share. Watson also said, “I think the thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible.” That describes her stated wish; the reports do not establish whether the two later spoke privately.

How did J.K. Rowling respond?
On 29 September 2025, Rowling responded publicly to Watson’s comments. She wrote: “Like other people who’ve never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is …” Rowling also argued that Watson had publicly criticized her and what Rowling characterized as the “trashing of women’s rights.” Those are Rowling’s judgments, not neutral descriptions of Watson’s position.

Why have Watson and Rowling been in conflict?
Their public disagreement became prominent after Watson voiced support for trans people in 2020, following public debate about Rowling’s comments on single-sex spaces. Watson wrote: “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”
In 2022, at the BAFTA film awards, Watson said, “I’m here for all of the witches.” Rowling later described receiving a note from Watson after the speech.
