No official announcement says the new Dragon Ball anime will be better than Dragon Ball Z. The two projects on the way are different: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is an enhanced edition of an existing series, while Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is a new story adapting the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc. Whether either surpasses DBZ is a judgment fans will have to make after watching it.
What has actually been announced?
Two distinct projects are in the works, and they should not be mistaken for a single new series. The January 25, 2026 announcement from the DRAGON BALL OFFICIAL SITE describes both projects and credits Akira Toriyama for original work, story, and character design.
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is an enhanced edition
This is a revised edition of the existing Dragon Ball Super television anime, not a new sequel. The official announcement describes extensive new cuts, revisions to existing scenes, re-rendering of all footage, newly recorded dubbing, added score and sound effects, and a reconstructed story. The site calls it an “ENHANCED edition” intended to express Toriyama’s original ideas and worldbuilding more accurately. That is the publisher’s description of its aim, not an independent assessment of the finished result.
The official update published September 2, 2026, gives the Japan premiere date as October 11, 2026. It does not establish a premiere date or streaming service for other territories. The official date announcement is specific to Japan.

Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is a separate story
This project is officially announced as in production. Its story follows the anime’s Universe Survival Arc and adapts the manga’s Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc. The official description identifies Goku, Vegeta, the Galactic Patrol, and the antagonist Moro. It is the project that continues the story, rather than a reworking of earlier Dragon Ball Super episodes.
The announcement does not provide a release date for The Galactic Patrol. It also does not establish where or when the series will be available internationally.
Does “better than DBZ” have an official answer?
No. The announcements describe project plans and production changes; they offer no measured comparison with Dragon Ball Z. There are no relevant ratings, audience scores, viewership figures, or comparative production statistics in the announcements. “Better” is therefore a fan opinion, not an officially confirmed outcome.
A useful comparison depends on what a viewer values: fight choreography, animation and compositing, pacing, story structure, character writing, music and sound design, or fidelity to Toriyama’s material. The announced changes to Beerus speak to its intended presentation, but they cannot establish how the finished edition will compare with DBZ. The new Galactic Patrol story likewise has not aired, so its execution cannot yet be judged.
What can DBZ fans reasonably expect?
- From Beerus: a revised presentation of existing Dragon Ball Super material, with substantial stated changes to footage, scenes, dubbing, music, sound effects, and story construction.
- From The Galactic Patrol: a new adaptation of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner manga arc, positioned after the anime’s Universe Survival Arc.
- From neither announcement: proof that either project will outdo DBZ, a confirmed global release schedule, or a verified viewing platform outside the announced Japan date for Beerus.
Where to read the Galactic Patrol story
The official announcement links The Galactic Patrol to the manga’s Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc, so readers can follow that story in the Dragon Ball Super manga. The announcement does not specify volume numbers or establish current edition availability.
