National Geographic lists the Season 1 episode that tells this story as “Hunt, Barter and Steal.” The episode’s danger comes not just from the theft but from the camp’s isolation: without replacement fuel before bad weather blocks delivery, Sue could freeze. The program’s past guest-preparation storyline does not establish whether Kavik accepts visitors today.
What happens when Sue returns to Kavik?
National Geographic’s official description of Season 1, Episode 2, “Hunt, Barter and Steal,” says Sue returns to her home at Kavik River Camp after being away for several months because of an injury. She worries that bears may have moved in during her absence, but discovers that thieves have taken her fuel supply. If she cannot get fuel replaced before weather prevents a delivery, she risks freezing.
The title “A Remote Alaskan Stay At Kavik River Camp” is not the episode’s official title. The official listing describes a survival story shaped by injury, a vulnerable homecoming, theft and the difficulty of resupply in a remote location—not a straightforward account of a visitor’s stay.
Why does the stolen fuel matter so much?
The episode’s stakes depend on the limits of ordinary resupply. At Kavik, losing fuel is not simply a matter of making a quick trip to a nearby store; replacement depends on delivery reaching the camp before the weather closes the opportunity.

In another Season 1 description, for “Blood, Sweat and Fear,” National Geographic places Kavik nearly 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle and says Sue has a seven-day fuel supply while waiting for an air delivery. Aircraft trouble and a storm threaten that delivery. Those distance and fuel figures are details in the program’s promotional episode copy, not independently verified measurements or current operating information.
How did Sue come to own the camp?
National Geographic’s Season 1 finale description says Sue travels to Fairbanks to officially buy Kavik River Camp. That provides the series’ account of her acquisition of the camp and explains why the show frames Kavik as her home and base.

Can you stay at Kavik River Camp now?
A Disney+ catalog entry for a Season 2 episode says Sue is nearly ready for paying guests to arrive at Kavik. That is evidence of a guest-preparation storyline at the time of that episode, not confirmation of present-day visitor access. The sources available here do not establish whether the camp currently accepts guests, how a stay might be arranged, what it would cost, or how visitors could get there. Do not treat the episode as a booking offer or current travel guidance.

National Geographic’s official press episode guide lists later stories involving Sue and Kavik. “Deep Dark Winter” is listed with an October 8, 2024 air date; “Mama’s Home” is listed with a January 21, 2025 air date and describes Sue returning to Kavik after weeks away for extensive surgery. These entries show that the series continued to tell stories involving Sue and the camp in later seasons. They do not verify Kavik’s status in 2026.

National Geographic describes Life Below Zero as “An exploration of the remote corners of Alaska,” following residents who face harsh winter conditions and the work of securing basic necessities. That is the program’s own framing. The episode descriptions offer a view of life as the series presents it, not an independent assessment of every resident’s experience or a guide to what a real trip to Kavik would entail.
