Labang and Nagrebcan
Labang is the bull that draws the cart. Nagrebcan is the destination named in the journey summary and part of the story’s setting. Separately, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines records Nagrebcan, Bauang, La Union as Arguilla’s birthplace. How was the story published and recognized?
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts associates the story with Arguilla’s collection How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife and Other Stories and gives the collection’s publication year as 1941. The NCCA also records Arguilla’s 1940 Commonwealth Literary Awards recognition for the short story. Philippine eLib, meanwhile, catalogs a Philippine Book Guild edition dated 1940 and a De La Salle University Press edition dated 1998.
