Louis Tomlinson and Eleanor Calder were widely reported to have dated from 2011 to 2015, reunited in 2017, and split again around late 2022. The later breakup was reported in January 2023; it was not presented as a detailed joint announcement. Here is what the public timeline establishes—and what remains unconfirmed.
Louis Tomlinson and Eleanor Calder’s relationship timeline
| Date | What was reported | How certain is it? |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | They began dating. Capital FM also reported that their first public outing was at Niall Horan’s birthday party that year. | Reported chronology; accounts of how they met differ, so no definitive introduction story is established. Capital FM |
| March 2015 | Their first split was announced. | Capital FM reported that contemporary coverage attributed it to Tomlinson’s work schedule and time apart. That explanation was not a direct joint statement. Capital FM |
| 2017 | They reportedly reunited. | Capital FM and The Standard place the reunion in 2017. Capital FM; The Standard |
| January 2020 | Tomlinson described Calder as his partner and said they lived together in London at the time of his interview with The Independent. | Direct comments in an interview, establishing their relationship at that point. The Independent |
| May 2021 | Capital FM reported that Tomlinson appeared briefly in one of Calder’s Instagram Stories and described them as together. | An outlet’s account of a social-media appearance, not a direct statement from either person about relationship status. Capital FM |
| Late 2022; reported January 2023 | A second split was reported to have happened shortly before Christmas 2022. The Standard later summarized their second relationship period as 2017–2022. | Reported breakup, not a detailed joint announcement. When did Louis Tomlinson and Eleanor Calder break up?
The first split: March 2015
Capital FM reported that the first breakup was announced in March 2015. Reports at the time linked it to Tomlinson’s schedule and extended time away, but that account was not a joint explanation from the pair. Capital FM
The later reported split: late 2022
Capital FM’s January 2023 timeline said they had reportedly split shortly before Christmas 2022. The Standard also describes the second period as running from 2017 to 2022. Neither account establishes a detailed public announcement from both people. Capital FM; The Standard
What Tomlinson said about Calder and “Back To You”
In comments Capital FM attributed to a 2018 interview on Lorraine, Tomlinson said the song’s relationship was not a direct description of his own: “There are some personal things that I relate to and contribute to lyrics. Nice to have something not as directly as relatable to me. The relationship with Eleanor is coincidental. But the relationship in the song is intense. Maybe they’re not right for each other. I wouldn’t describe Eleanor as that. She’s ace.” Capital FM

What is—and is not—established about the timeline
- The commonly reported chronology has two periods: 2011–2015 and 2017–2022. Capital FM; The Standard
- The 2020 interview and 2021 report document coverage of the relationship during its second period; they do not establish the pair’s status after the reported late-2022 split.
- Accounts of how they met conflict, so the available timeline supports saying they began dating in 2011, not naming a definitive first meeting.
- Reported breakup explanations, including claims about busy schedules, are not confirmed reasons from both partners.
Accordingly, Eleanor Calder should not be described as Tomlinson’s current partner on the basis of older articles calling her his girlfriend. The cited later coverage reports a split, while the reviewed chronology does not establish a newer status.
