Police said they believed his death was an apparent suicide; contemporaneous reports described the circumstances as under investigation.
Who was Lee Sun-kyun?
Lee built a long career in South Korean television before Parasite brought him to a much wider international audience. His screen presence could be warm, restrained or sharply authoritative, and he became a familiar lead in popular dramas as well as a performer in films and newer streaming-era projects.
Yonhap reported that Lee began his entertainment career in 1999, appearing in the music video for Bijou’s “It’s Okay.” His television work included Coffee Prince, Behind The White Tower, Pasta and My Mister. Those roles made him a prominent actor in South Korea well before his Oscar-winning film success.
How did Parasite bring him global recognition?
In Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, Lee played the head of the affluent Park family, whose household becomes entangled with the poorer Kim family. The film’s careful shifts between social comedy, suspense and tragedy made it a worldwide phenomenon, and Lee’s performance anchored one side of its class divide.

What was reported about his death and the investigation?
Yonhap reported that Lee was found dead in a car near Waryong Park in central Seoul on December 27, 2023. Police said they believed he had taken his own life and opened an investigation into the exact circumstances and timing. The Associated Press reported his death that day and noted that police initially declined to say whether they had determined that he had killed himself. The contemporaneous reporting cited here does not establish later final findings.
At the time, Lee was being investigated on suspicion of using marijuana and other illegal drugs. Yonhap reported that he had been questioned three times, including a session lasting about 19 hours. Lee said he had been tricked and did not know what he was taking. Yonhap reported negative results from both a preliminary reagent test and a National Forensic Service laboratory test. The reports describe suspicions and Lee’s denial, not a proven finding of guilt.

Lee had asked through his lawyer that his final police questioning not be open to press photography, Yonhap reported, but police rejected the request. An Incheon police agency official said, “It’s correct that bringing people behind closed doors conforms to the principles.” The agency chief defended the investigation, saying it had followed lawful procedures.
