The Vicens Vives edition titled Lazarillo de Tormes in the Clásicos Hispánicos series is the 164-page Spanish paperback with ISBN 9788431699819. It is not the publisher’s separate Clásicos Adaptados edition, which is adapted by Eduardo Alonso and has a different ISBN.
What is the Vicens Vives Clásicos Hispánicos edition?
Vicens Vives lists the Clásicos Hispánicos edition as a Spanish-language paperback by an anonymous author. Its official specifications are 164 pages and dimensions of 13.5 × 19 cm. The publisher describes Lázaro de Tormes, a town crier in Toledo, as recounting the hardships and stratagems of his life while serving successive masters. See the official Clásicos Hispánicos listing.
The listing does not establish what introduction, notes, illustrations, or other supplementary material this copy contains, so those features should not be assumed from its series name.
How to distinguish it from the adaptation
Vicens Vives also publishes a different edition under Clásicos Adaptados. Check the series and ISBN when choosing a copy; the two listings describe distinct books.
| Edition | Series and adaptation status | ISBN | Pages | Audience listed by publisher |

Specifications and series details are from the publisher’s Clásicos Hispánicos listing and Clásicos Adaptados listing. If you want the edition identified in this article, match ISBN 9788431699819 rather than relying on the title alone.
What is Lazarillo de Tormes about?
The work presents Lázaro’s life in the first person as a long letter, recounting the experiences and schemes that shape his service under successive masters. Penguin Random House describes the oldest known edition as dating to 1554 and identifies the work as a precursor of the picaresque novel. “Oldest known edition” does not establish the date of the first-ever printing. Why is the author listed as anonymous?
The work is conventionally identified as anonymous; the Vicens Vives listing credits its author as “Anónimo.” In the Penguin Random House description, scholar Francisco Rico offers a more specific interpretation: “el Lazarillo no es tanto un libro anónimo, de pluma ignorada, como más propiamente un libro apócrifo.” Rico’s formulation reflects the work’s attribution to its protagonist, Lázaro de Tormes; it is an interpretation, not a confirmed identification of a historical author. The quotation appears in the publisher’s description.
