Several of her compositions reached broad audiences through other performers’ recordings, including “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “And When I Die,” “Eli’s Coming,” and “Stoney End.” This means listeners may recognize the songs even if they first encountered them in versions by other artists rather than in Nyro’s own performances.
Nyro described writing and singing from childhood in an interview with Life magazine in 1970, quoted by the Associated Press: “I always sang, from the time I could make noise. And I always wrote. I wrote little poems and at about 8 or 9, I started writing little songs.”
