Letterboxd Video Store is a live, curated movie-rental service inside Letterboxd—not a subscription library. You can rent selected films through the service, but titles, prices and viewing deadlines vary by country and film.
What is Letterboxd Video Store?
Letterboxd describes Video Store as “a film rental platform inside Letterboxd.” Its curated shelves are designed to connect film discovery on Letterboxd with renting a selected title. The company says programming may include festival films without distribution, films that have been on members’ watchlists for a long time, restorations and rediscoveries, and limited-time previews or unreleased films. It says member watchlists, reviews and other signals help inform those shelves. Letterboxd’s Video Store primer describes the service and its curation.
Did Letterboxd Video Store launch in December?
The December launch language is now historical. On November 20, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Letterboxd planned to open the Video Store in early December. Letterboxd’s current support information and rental catalog show that the service is operating, but the sources do not establish the exact first day it went live. TechCrunch’s November 20, 2025 report records the planned timing.
What movies can you rent on Letterboxd?
The Video Store is curated rather than a general-purpose subscription catalog. Its selection can include festival and unreleased films, restorations, rediscoveries and other titles chosen for featured shelves. The catalog changes: films can be added or removed, and some are available only for a limited time. Check the current Video Store catalog and the individual film page for the latest availability in your location.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How much does a Letterboxd rental cost?
There is no single rental price established for every title or country. Letterboxd says new and unreleased films may be priced in line with the premium tier of standard digital rentals in that country, while its Lost and Found titles are lower priced. It also says a portion of each rental goes to the people behind participating films. The price shown on a title’s page for your location is the relevant amount; Letterboxd’s pricing explanation does not set one universal price.
How long do you have to watch a rental?
For most rentals, you have 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish once playback begins. Limited-time films can have shorter deadlines. Letterboxd says the applicable viewing window is displayed when you rent the title. See Letterboxd’s rental terms for the standard and limited-time windows.

Can you watch Letterboxd rentals on a TV?
Yes. Letterboxd lists Apple TV 4K, web, iOS, Android, Chromecast and AirPlay as viewing options. Apple TV hardware is not required: you can also cast from supported devices or use a compatible AirPlay setup. Letterboxd’s smart-TV instructions specify that its app works on Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD; Android and web playback can cast to compatible Chromecast devices; and iPhone, iPad and Mac can AirPlay to AirPlay 2-compatible devices. Letterboxd also says AirPlay works directly with most modern Roku devices running Roku OS 9.4 or later.
Why might a film be unavailable where you live?
Availability is title- and country-specific. Letterboxd cites film rights and tax complications as reasons a title may not be available in every location. If a film is unavailable to you, Letterboxd says you can add it to your Watchlist and receive a notification if it becomes available later. Its country availability guidance explains the limits; check the film’s own Video Store page for its current status in your region.
