After ABC preempted Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely on September 17, 2025, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon responded with satire, support for Kimmel and arguments about free speech. Kimmel returned on September 23, but Nexstar and Sinclair were still preempting the program on their ABC affiliates, according to ABC News.
Why ABC pulled the show
ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be “preempted indefinitely” after Kimmel commented on the response to the killing of Charlie Kirk. ABC News reported that FCC Chair Brendan Carr had called for the show to be suspended before the network announced its decision. The network described its action as a preemption; contemporaneous coverage often called it a suspension. The show later returned.
The dispute raised questions about network and affiliate decisions, public pressure and freedom of speech. Some hosts and commentators characterized the action as censorship or political intimidation; those were their judgments, not settled legal findings.
What the late-night hosts said
Stephen Colbert defended free speech
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert mocked ABC, Disney and FCC Chair Brendan Carr, and argued for freedom of speech. ABC News Australia reported his line: “You know what my community values are buster? Freedom of speech.” The Associated Press summarized Colbert as calling the suspension “blatant censorship.”

Jon Stewart turned political pressure into satire
Stewart appeared in an extra Daily Show episode presented as “government-approved.” He used exaggerated praise of the administration to satirize political pressure and restrictions on speech.
Seth Meyers voiced solidarity
Meyers said he was proud to call Kimmel a friend and linked that friendship to the privilege of hosting a show. As ABC News Australia reported, he said: “It is a privilege and an honour to call Jimmy Kimmel my friend, in the same way that it’s a privilege and honour to do this show every night.” He also used mock flattery of Donald Trump to make a point about free expression, and said he would continue his own show “with enthusiasm and integrity.”

Former late-night host David Letterman commented at The Atlantic Festival, rather than on a late-night broadcast. The Associated Press reported that he said: “I feel bad about this, because we all see where see this is going, correct? It’s managed media. It’s no good. It’s silly. It’s ridiculous.”

When Kimmel returned—and what happened at affiliates
On September 23, after nearly a week away, Kimmel returned to the air. Disney said it had suspended production to avoid further inflaming a tense situation and decided to bring the show back after conversations with Kimmel. ABC News reported on September 24 that Nexstar and Sinclair were still preempting the program on their affiliate stations. That distinction matters: ABC’s decision to return the show did not mean every ABC affiliate was airing it.
