Late-night hosts criticized Donald Trump’s October 31, 2025, Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago because its celebration of wealth landed as the U.S. government shutdown continued and food assistance for millions of people faced a funding disruption. The party’s reported slogan—“a little party never killed nobody”—and its literary inspiration gave the hosts an especially pointed way to contrast the event’s glamour with the hardship outside it.
What happened at Mar-a-Lago
Trump held the party at Mar-a-Lago on Friday, October 31, 2025. It was themed around F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and reports gave its slogan as “a little party never killed nobody.” The event took place during the federal government shutdown, with a disruption to SNAP funding scheduled for November 1.
The Congressional Record reproduced a People report saying the U.S. Department of Agriculture had warned there would not be enough funding for the 42 million Americans then relying on SNAP to receive benefits that Saturday. Why the Gatsby theme drew criticism
The hosts treated the theme as more than a costume-party reference. Fitzgerald’s novel depicts extravagant wealth, but it also examines the damage, inequality, and disillusionment surrounding that world. Against the shutdown and the imminent SNAP funding disruption, a lavish party built around that setting—and a slogan celebrating partying—became a target for jokes about political judgment and conspicuous wealth.

The criticism was about the contrast and the optics; the reports do not establish that the party itself caused the benefits disruption. The hosts also made their points in comedy segments, not as neutral reporting.

Jon Stewart: “gross income inequality”
On The Daily Show, Stewart called the event an “ode to decadence and hedonism” and said its apparent theme was “gross income inequality.” He connected the party’s dancers, costumes, and champagne to the timing of SNAP benefits ending. (The Guardian)

Stephen Colbert: food assistance during the shutdown
On The Late Show, Colbert focused on food assistance and the shutdown. He said nearly 42 million Americans had lost food-stamp benefits as of that weekend and joked, “No one should understand the importance of daily meals more than Donald Trump.” The figure and the timing are his 2025 framing, not a current SNAP status update. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel joked that the theme was one “you would select only if you’ve never read the Great Gatsby.” He called the party the “Trumpiest Trump move of all time” and said it “felt like the last big bash before the Epstein files come out.” That last line was a comic jab, not evidence of a factual allegation about the party or the files.
