The film’s official site lists Momoa among the cast, though it does not name his role. Variety reported his confirmation after a March 31, 2025, interview on TODAY.
What did Jason Momoa say about returning to Dune?
During a TODAY interview with host Craig Melvin, Momoa said, “I’m making a comeback,” then added, “You heard it first, right here with you, baby.” Variety’s April 1, 2025, account identifies the role as Duncan Idaho. The TODAY video listing also describes the interview as confirming the character’s return.
Momoa also alluded to the books while discussing the comeback. As Variety reported his remarks, he said, “If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right?” before confirming he would be coming back.
Who does Momoa play in Dune: Part Three?
Variety identifies Momoa’s role as Duncan Idaho. The official Dune: Part Three site includes Momoa in its cast list but does not specify his character, so the role identification comes from Variety’s coverage of the interview rather than the cast listing.

How can Duncan Idaho return?
Idaho’s apparent death in the earlier film makes the comeback a natural question, but the sources confirming Momoa’s return do not spell out how the film will handle it. Variety reports that Dune: Part Three is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, while the official site says the film is based on Herbert’s novels. That source-material connection provides context for Momoa’s book reference, but it does not establish which events or character details the film will adapt.
What is Dune: Part Three about?
The official synopsis places the story nearly two decades after Paul Atreides takes control of the Imperium. It describes Paul as an emperor facing the consequences of his reign, with old allies returning, new threats emerging, and a conspiracy involving Chani. This is the studio’s summary, not a complete account of the plot.
