KFC Japan says its Christmas campaign began in 1974, but the familiar story that a shortage of turkey inspired it is one of several accounts, not a fully settled origin. The often-repeated figure of 3.6 million families comes from a 2019 report; it is an old estimate, not a verified count of Japanese households ordering KFC every year today.
How KFC became associated with Christmas in Japan
KFC Japan dates the start of its Christmas campaign to 1974. The company describes Christmas as a growing occasion for seasonal meals at home and says the campaign helped extend the idea of a Christmas party meal beyond celebrations centered on children. Its global corporate history also credits the campaign with developing into a seasonal offering that included special menu items, premium roast chicken and a changing party bucket. KFC’s account of how “Kentucky for Christmas” began is a company retrospective, not independent confirmation of every detail.
Was the campaign really inspired by a lack of turkey?
The turkey story is the best-known explanation, but it should be presented as a corporate origin story rather than established fact. In KFC’s global account, a foreign customer in Japan reportedly remarked that turkey was hard to find; a member of KFC Japan’s sales team overheard the comment and used it to inspire the “Kentucky for Christmas” campaign.
KFC Japan itself warns that there are differing accounts of how the campaign began. Its museum explainer includes another version: a store manager wore a Santa costume at an event, saw a positive response and developed the idea into a campaign. The company’s museum page describes these as competing explanations, rather than resolving which one is definitive. KFC Japan’s museum explainer gives the qualification alongside the stories.

What does “3.6 million families” mean?
The figure refers to an estimate in a 2019 report by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada about Japanese families celebrating Christmas with KFC. It is not a current verified annual tally, and it does not establish that exactly 3.6 million distinct families place an order each year. The same report said KFC stores could see ten times their average sales volume in the days before Christmas; that, too, is a comparison reported in 2019, not a current KFC Japan statistic. The foundation’s Japan e-commerce report is the source for both figures.
No newer primary source establishes a current household count or seasonal sales multiplier. The 3.6 million number is useful as a snapshot of the tradition’s reported scale at the time, but it should not be mistaken for a live annual customer count.

How Christmas KFC is ordered—and why dates change
KFC Japan uses seasonal menus and reservation arrangements that vary by year. For the 2025 season, reservations opened November 4, and reserved items were available for pickup from December 19 through December 25. The early-booking deadline was December 12. KFC Japan said customers could reserve in stores or through online ordering; some off-peak reservation benefits were online-only. These were 2025 dates and offers, not a standing annual schedule. KFC Japan’s 2025 reservation announcement contains the details for that season.
The official KFC Japan Christmas campaign page said the 2025 menu sale had ended and invited visitors to look forward to 2026; it did not provide 2026 menu, prices or reservation dates at the time covered by the available information. For an upcoming season, check that campaign page or a new KFC Japan announcement rather than relying on a previous year’s dates.

A seasonal custom, not a claim that everyone celebrates the same way
KFC’s history shows how a restaurant campaign became a recognizable part of Christmas in Japan: a seasonal meal, repeated promotion and special menus gave customers an easy way to mark the occasion. That explains the tradition without implying that KFC is the only way people in Japan celebrate Christmas—or that every family participates. The strongest numerical claim available is still the 2019 estimate, not a current count.
