George Lucas remembered James Earl Jones as both the unmistakable voice of Darth Vader and “a beautiful human being.” Mark Hamill, whose Luke Skywalker was Vader’s son in the Star Wars story, posted a brief “#RIP dad” tribute after Jones died on September 9, 2024, at age 93. Their words were among several remembrances published that day by film and entertainment organizations.
What did George Lucas say about James Earl Jones?
In a September 9, 2024 remembrance on StarWars.com, Lucas praised Jones’s talent and character: “James was an incredible actor, a most unique voice both in art and spirit.” He added: “For nearly half a century he was Darth Vader, but the secret to it all is he was a beautiful human being.” Lucas also remembered Jones as a devoted husband and father.
The tribute carries particular weight because Lucas created Star Wars and worked with Jones on the films. Lucasfilm says Jones was cast to voice Vader in early 1977. Jones returned to the role in films and series including The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One, The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars Rebels and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Lucasfilm’s retrospective also emphasized Jones’s humility about Vader and his appreciation for David Prowse, who physically performed the character. The role was a collaboration: Prowse supplied Vader’s imposing presence on screen, while Jones gave the character the resonant voice audiences recognized.

What did Mark Hamill post after Jones died?
Hamill posted “#RIP dad” with a broken-heart emoji, according to CBS News; The Guardian also reported the short tribute as “RIP dad.” Hamill played Luke Skywalker, Vader’s son in the story, so the family address made the post resonate beyond a conventional co-star farewell. It was a brief social-media message, not a longer formal statement.
How did Lucasfilm, Disney and SAG-AFTRA honor Jones?
Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy called Jones one of the era’s most versatile and talented actors, noting his work across film, stage and television. She said the “menacing baritone” he brought to Vader would remain beloved by fans and be regarded as one of cinema’s great villain performances. Her statement appeared in the same Lucasfilm tribute as Lucas’s remembrance.

Disney’s account says Jones had nearly 200 film and television credits. SAG-AFTRA
SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland described Jones as “a unique talent” and praised his contribution to acting and the integrity he brought to his roles. The union’s September 9 statement noted that Jones received the 45th SAG Life Achievement Award in 2008 and worked across film, television and stage, as well as supporting literacy philanthropy.
Why do tributes often mention both Darth Vader and Mufasa?
Jones’s voice connected two characters with very different meanings. Vader is a menacing antagonist in Star Wars; Mufasa, whom Jones voiced in Disney’s The Lion King (1994), is remembered for warmth and authority. Iger’s tribute explicitly set those contrasting qualities side by side.
