What did James Charles say about the Bunnings sausage sizzle?
PerthNow reported on 2 December 2025 that Charles was visiting the Gold Coast to promote his makeup brand, Painted. He said Australian followers had urged him to try a Bunnings sausage sizzle. In the video described by the outlet, he noticed the small green tent outside the hardware store, wondered why sausages were being sold there, ordered six with onion and tried one.
His first reaction, as quoted by PerthNow, was: “It’s literally just a hot dog.” He added, “I wish the bread was thicker, but it’s pretty good,” and the report said he ultimately rated it 10 out of 10. PerthNow also reported that the video had more than 4.4 million views when its article was published; that is a dated figure, not a current view count. PerthNow’s 2 December 2025 account is the source for the scene and quoted reaction.
Why did some viewers object?
The disagreement was about more than whether Charles liked the food. PerthNow said he called it a “hotdog” in the video and “sausage sizzler” in the caption. In a written response to criticism quoted by the outlet, he said: “I’m sorry but it literally is (a hotdog).” PerthNow reported hundreds of replies disputing the comparison.

Those words expose a mismatch between a visitor’s quick description and the local names and associations viewers attached to the food. “Snag” and “sausage sizzle” are common terms used in the coverage; “hot dog” foregrounds a resemblance in the bread-and-sausage combination. Calling it a hot dog could sound dismissive to people who regard the stall and its tradition as distinctly Australian, even though Charles also said it tasted good.
What is a Bunnings sausage sizzle?
It is a community fundraiser hosted at a Bunnings hardware-store location. Local charities and community groups run the stalls, making the setting part of the experience: customers are buying food, but the event also raises money for a cause. PerthNow describes the sausage sizzle as a familiar Australian fundraising tradition. PerthNow’s explanation of the tradition also discusses election-day “democracy sausages”; that broader historical context is not needed to establish what happened during Charles’s visit.

In a follow-up interview reported by Nine’s Today on 5 December 2025, Charles said he had not initially realised the stall was raising money for charity. He said the family’s order came to $31 and that he attempted to pay $100 because he wanted to support the cause. Nine also quoted him explaining that followers had recommended the food after he tried Greggs in the UK and a spice bag in Ireland. Nine’s interview report provides his later account.
How did people react?
PerthNow recorded both criticism and praise. Some commenters responded with “That’s it?!” or urged him to “Put some RESPECT on Bunnings’ name”; others called his attempt “bloody iconic.” Influencer Sopha Dopha described the sausage sizzle as “an Aussie delicacy,” while Peach PRC reportedly told Charles that local groups ran the stalls for charity.

Physically, the resemblance Charles noticed is understandable: the meal centers on a sausage in bread. But “just a hot dog” leaves out the local vocabulary and the fundraiser setting that make a Bunnings sausage sizzle meaningful to many people. The disagreement was therefore partly about naming and context, not simply a dispute over what the food tastes like.

The format remains active beyond Charles’s visit. In a 14 May 2026 release, Bunnings said more than 290 Australian warehouses would take part in a national sausage sizzle on 16 May, with proceeds supporting FightMND. That later event illustrates the continuing fundraiser format; it does not provide further detail about the 2025 Gold Coast visit. Bunnings’ 14 May 2026 announcement gives the event details.
