Reports about Jake T. Austin described a 2013 DUI arrest, a separate hit-and-run case that ended in a not-guilty finding, and a 2014 allegation about an argument at a gifting suite. Those episodes are not all established facts of the same kind: the gifting-suite account relied on witnesses cited by TMZ, while TMZ reported that the DUI charges were dismissed through a plea deal and that Austin was later found not guilty in the hit-and-run case. The available reporting does not establish that anyone deliberately “swept” the stories away or that they caused his departure from The Fosters.
What was Jake T. Austin accused of?
The phrase “swept under the rug” appeared in TheThings’ April 26, 2023 headline. The coverage it gathered concerned three reported episodes from 2013 and 2014. They need to be separated: one was an allegation from unnamed sources and witnesses, and the other two involved reported arrests or charges followed by legal outcomes.
The 2014 gifting-suite allegation
TMZ reported that witnesses said Austin was turned away from a Candies gifting suite at the Teen Choice Awards in August 2014, argued with an employee, and threw an empty shoe box at her. TMZ said it had contacted Austin for comment but had not received a response by publication. This is an allegation in an outlet’s account; the available reporting does not independently corroborate it or provide Austin’s response to this specific claim. The October 2013 DUI arrest
TMZ reported that California Highway Patrol officers stopped Austin on October 8, 2013, after he drove without headlights, and arrested and charged him with DUI. In a later report, TMZ said the two DUI counts were dismissed in exchange for a no-contest plea to speeding, with 24 months’ probation. An arrest and charge are not a conviction; according to that report, the DUI counts were dismissed. The account is based on TMZ reporting, not court records reviewed here. The November 2013 crash and hit-and-run case
TMZ reported that a car associated with Austin hit three parked cars in the Los Angeles area in November 2013 and that its occupants left before police arrived. TMZ later reported that Austin was charged with hit-and-run. In December 2014, the outlet said he was found not guilty after the judge concluded he had reported the incident within a reasonable time. The reported legal outcome was not a hit-and-run conviction. TMZ’s report on the not-guilty finding.
Was the story “swept under the rug”?
That wording suggests deliberate suppression. The reporting available here does not establish that a person, production, or institution coordinated to bury the incidents. Nor does it establish how widely each story circulated; there is no sound basis for claiming that the reports were never covered or for assigning a measure to their visibility.
Rank #2
What can be said more narrowly is that the incidents were reported, but with different levels and kinds of support. The gifting-suite account was attributed to witnesses by TMZ, with no Austin comment included at publication. The DUI and hit-and-run stories included reported legal developments, but the accounts cited here are news reports rather than primary court records. Those distinctions matter more than the headline’s broad implication.

In a 2017 report about his fan Q&A, Austin said he was asked to return for three episodes and would not have been able to work on anything else, so he left. He also said he wanted roles with more substantive content. The account does not say that he was fired for bad behavior. Hollywood Life’s report on Austin’s fan Q&A.

In a later reflection published by Flaunt Magazine, Austin acknowledged that he had made choices he would do differently. He said that while working on The Fosters he began forgetting lines and taking his acting less seriously: “I started losing the sense of the love and passion of things I took for granted. I started not remembering my lines, not taking my craft as seriously as an actor should.” He described being recast as probably the best thing that could have happened to him. These comments are Austin’s retrospective account; they do not show that any particular allegation prompted the recasting. Flaunt Magazine’s interview with Austin.
