He had moved to the Hudson Valley in 1970, but the available accounts do not establish that he lived in Pawling for exactly 50 years. What they do show is a longtime resident who took part in local life, supported community causes and was remembered by neighbors as more than a famous voice.
What is known about Jones’s life in Pawling?
Jones’s death at his Pawling home was reported by The Washington Post; his agent confirmed the death but did not cite a cause. Local outlet HVNY reported that Jones moved to the Hudson Valley in 1970 after a road trip and was drawn to the region’s “big trees…big enough to hug.” That description is HVNY’s account of his affection for the area, rather than a quotation the outlet identifies as directly recorded speech.
The move to the Hudson Valley is not proof of an exact 50-year residence in Pawling. The most reliable way to describe the connection is that Jones was a longtime Pawling resident. In the town’s September 11, 2024 board minutes, Supervisor James Schmitt called him “a resident of Pawling” who was “very involved in the community,” adding, “He will be missed.”
How did he participate in community life?
Everyday stops around town
In a September 10, 2024 report, News 12 described Jones as a familiar presence at Pawling businesses, including the Family Quick Stop and Corner Bakery. Bakery staff recalled that he often ordered extra-thick chocolate milkshakes. These are local recollections of his routines, not a formal record of his visits.

Support for local causes
News 12 also reported that Jones donated to the local scout troop, supported a library addition and helped raise funds for his son’s school. Those accounts point to support for organizations in his community, alongside the less formal connections formed through regular visits around town.
A role in young writers’ work
Jones also volunteered with the Bardavon’s Young Playwrights Festival from 1995 to 1997, according to Spectrum News. Executive director Chris Silva recalled that Jones voiced young writers’ work, giving participants a powerful experience of hearing their words spoken by an actor of his stature. “So for the kids, it was just incredibly empowering in terms of recognizing the power of their own words,” Silva said.

Which projects connected him to the wider Hudson Valley?
Jones’s community ties extended beyond Pawling. HVNY reported that he and his wife, actor Cecilia Hart, funded construction of a 300-seat theater at Poughkeepsie Day School in 2000. The James Earl Jones Theater was a school project in Poughkeepsie, distinct from the local Pawling causes reported by News 12.
For the town itself, Pawling’s September 11, 2024 board minutes recorded a plan to show Jones’s films at a community event on September 14. The planned screening was a public tribute to a resident whose work was known around the world and whose daily presence had also become familiar locally.

Why his connection to Pawling mattered
Jones’s legacy in Pawling was not limited to his celebrated acting career. Town officials described him as involved in the community; local reporting preserved small, personal memories of his visits and orders; and accounts of his support for local causes show a connection that reached beyond celebrity appearances. In remembering him, Pawling recognized both the extraordinary career and the neighbor people encountered in everyday life.
