Parade also attributes this line to him: “There was no residual money.” The available reporting gives no dollar amount or contract terms to explain precisely what he was paid.

Parade’s February 2026 account of the 2012 interview says Van Der Beek described the residual money from Dawson’s Creek as “almost nothing” and quotes him as saying, “There was no residual money.” The original TODAY.com interview could not be independently checked, so those words should be understood as Parade’s report of the earlier conversation—not as a verified transcript.
The remark predates the show’s end by several years: Dawson’s Creek ran on The WB from 1998 to 2003, according to the Associated Press. The AP reported Van Der Beek died at age 48 on February 11, 2026. “Before death” therefore describes the timing of the older interview, not a statement made shortly before his death.
How much did he make from reruns?
No verified dollar figure for Van Der Beek’s Dawson’s Creek residual earnings is available in the cited reporting. It also does not establish how often he was paid, which markets generated payments, or whether he received nothing from every kind of reuse. “Almost nothing” is his reported description, not a published earnings total.

Nor does the available evidence identify a contract clause or prove a specific reason for the low amount he described. Claims that he signed away residuals, received zero dollars in all markets, or was subject to a particular payment formula go beyond what the sources establish.
What residuals are—and why one actor’s contract matters
Residuals are payments negotiated through union agreements for certain uses of a production beyond its initial market or exhibition. SAG-AFTRA explains that they can be triggered by reruns and releases in additional markets, including pay television, subscription streaming, and digital downloads. Whether and when a payment is due depends on the applicable agreement and producer revenue, among other conditions; the union’s general guide does not disclose Van Der Beek’s individual contract or payment history.

That distinction matters: a general description of how residuals work cannot establish what one performer received for one series. Without the relevant contract and payment records, the precise explanation for Van Der Beek’s reported experience remains unknown.

SAG-AFTRA’s later “Streaming Forward” overview describes changes to residual structures, including a revenue-based residual replacing a fixed residual in certain syndication arrangements and improved fixed residuals for high-budget subscription streaming. Those changes show that formulas have evolved; they are not evidence of the terms governing Dawson’s Creek or Van Der Beek’s individual payments.

To evaluate any residual claim, the relevant questions are the agreement and period that applied, the original versus later market, the type of reuse, and whether the formula was fixed or revenue-based. That framework helps explain why residuals vary, but it does not reconstruct Van Der Beek’s contract.
