The best-documented example often cited is Ben Askren’s severe illness in 2025; reporting on it does not link his pneumonia or double lung transplant to his 2021 fight with Paul. The available evidence does not verify a roster-wide pattern of misfortune.
What people mean by the “Jake Paul curse”
The phrase refers to online claims that some of Paul’s opponents experienced bad luck after fighting him. A viral roundup says eight of thirteen opponents faced misfortune, but that is the roundup’s own tally—not an independently verified statistic or evidence of a shared cause. StadiumNest’s roundup documents the claim’s circulation, not a proven curse.
To assess any example, separate four questions: what allegedly happened, what reliable reporting establishes and when, whether it came before or after the bout, and whether a source connects it to the fight. Timing alone does not establish causation.
Paul’s opponents and fight results
Paul has faced opponents from different sporting backgrounds. ESPN’s fight record lists wins over former NBA player Nate Robinson and MMA fighter Ben Askren, two bouts with Tyron Woodley, and a professional boxing loss to Tommy Fury. ESPN’s record page establishes fight outcomes and chronology; it does not document every opponent’s later life or career.

That varied roster makes broad claims difficult to evaluate: “misfortune” can mean illness, a personal event, finances, or a career change, and those are not one consistent measure. Each claim needs its own evidence rather than being counted as part of a single, defined outcome.
What happened to Ben Askren?
In July 2025, the Associated Press reported that Askren had developed severe pneumonia, spent weeks in the hospital, undergone a double lung transplant, and was recovering. The report said the illness followed a staph infection. It also noted that Askren had lost to Paul by first-round TKO in April 2021. The AP report does not say the fight caused the infection, pneumonia, or transplant.

AP also quoted Askren describing his memory of the period during his illness: “No recollection, zero idea, no idea what happened.” He was speaking about his memory, not making a claim about Paul or their bout. The same report provides that context.
Why the supposed pattern is not proof
Lists of striking events can create an impression of a pattern when they select examples after the fact. A later event may be real and serious without being related to a previous fight. IBTimes describes the curse as online speculation and discusses how timing and selective storytelling keep it circulating. Its coverage of a crash involving Anthony Joshua’s team reports renewed speculation; it does not establish a supernatural connection or show that Paul’s fight caused the tragedy. IBTimes’ coverage is evidence of the narrative, not of causation.

- Chronology is not a mechanism: an event happening after a bout does not show that the bout caused it.
- Different events cannot be tallied as one outcome: illness, personal difficulties, financial claims, and career changes require separate definitions and reliable evidence.
- A roundup is not a verified rate: the “eight of thirteen” figure is an outlet’s assertion, not a dependable statistic.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
Available reporting supports specific facts about Paul’s fight record and Askren’s 2025 illness. It does not establish that fighting Paul caused Askren’s condition, that other opponents share a verified pattern of bad luck, or that every claim in viral lists is accurate. A complete account of what happened to each opponent afterward would require case-by-case verification from reliable records and reporting.
For broader context on Paul’s opponent mix, The Guardian’s reporting discusses the range of people he has faced. That context does not turn the “curse” into a documented effect.
