Monica Sirianni, a 37-year-old former contestant on Italy’s Grande Fratello, died in May 2023 after becoming unwell at a bar in Soveria Mannelli, Calabria. Contemporaneous reports said she was taken to hospital and died shortly after arriving. They did not establish that she fainted or identify a medical cause of death.

What happened to Monica Sirianni?

Reports place the episode late on Friday, 5 May 2023, at a bar in Soveria Mannelli, in the province of Catanzaro. Sirianni was there with friends. Sky TG24 reported that her friends called for urgent help; she was taken to hospital and died shortly after reaching the emergency department. Sky TG24’s account describes her as having suffered a sudden illness, not as having a confirmed fainting episode.

The Italian term used in contemporaneous coverage was “malore,” meaning a sudden illness or medical episode. The reporting does not establish what happened medically, so “fainting” should not be treated as a verified diagnosis or description.

Her connection to Grande Fratello

Sirianni appeared on Italy’s Grande Fratello when she was 25. ANSA reported her participation in 2011, while Mediaset’s TGCOM24 and Sky TG24 identify the season as the 2011/2012 edition, also described as the show’s twelfth edition. After leaving television, ANSA reported, she worked as an English teacher.

ANSA also reported that Sirianni was born in Sydney to Calabrian parents who had emigrated to Australia, later returned to Italy, and lived in a city in Lombardy. The report did not name that city.

What authorities reported

In a report dated 12 May 2023, ANSA said the prosecutor’s office in Lamezia Terme had opened an investigation to establish whether anyone was responsible for Sirianni’s death. Prosecutors ordered an autopsy and assigned inquiries to the Carabinieri Company of Soveria Mannelli. ANSA’s report described investigative steps, not a final finding.

What is—and is not—known about the cause of death

The contemporaneous reports from Sky TG24, Mediaset’s TGCOM24 and ANSA described the cause of the episode as under investigation or did not provide a medical explanation. The sources cited here do not report the autopsy results, a final medical cause of death, or a later conclusion in the investigation. They establish the reported sequence—becoming unwell at a bar, transport to hospital and death shortly after admission—but do not show that the episode at the bar was itself determined to be the cause of death.

Mediaset’s TGCOM24 coverage also identified Sirianni as a former contestant and summarized the reported circumstances. Its account, like the other contemporaneous reports, does not supply a settled medical explanation.
