Which Thanos does Thor kill?
After the Avengers find Thanos living in retirement, Thor kills him by decapitating him. This is the 2018 Thanos: the one who completed the Snap and destroyed the Infinity Stones. Why does another Thanos appear in the final battle?
The final-battle Thanos comes from 2014. The Avengers encounter that earlier version during their time heist; after learning about their plans, he travels forward to attack them. Weta Digital visual effects supervisor Matt Aitken described him as “four years younger” than the Infinity War Thanos, arriving from the Guardians of the Galaxy era (The Art of VFX interview, 2019).

How does Endgame’s time travel explain the difference?

Co-director Anthony Russo said the film chose “the multiverse theory,” and explained that going to the past can create “an alternate future” rather than change the present (Los Angeles Times interview, May 3, 2019). That is the movie’s fictional time-travel framework, not a claim about established real-world physics.

Because the Avengers’ trip to 2014 does not undo the events of their present, killing the 2018 Thanos remains consequential. The earlier Thanos can still travel from his branch into the final battle, where Tony’s snap makes him and his forces disintegrate. The official Avengers: Endgame screenplay describes Thanos watching his troops disappear before he disintegrates as well.

No such conclusion follows from Endgame alone. The film shows the deaths of its 2018 and 2014 versions; these events do not establish that every possible Thanos in every branch reality is gone. Whether another variant exists or could appear is a broader question the cited film and filmmaker comments do not settle.
