No: Kurt Russell did not really propose to Goldie Hawn at the 1989 Oscars. The couple made up the apparent proposal as a comedy routine, working out their replacement for the planned script in the shower shortly before leaving for the ceremony, Russell recalled in a 2026 interview with Entertainment Weekly.
What happened onstage at the 1989 Oscars?
Hawn and Russell presented the Best Directing award at the 61st Academy Awards. Their banter played on the fact that they were a couple who were not married: Hawn asked whether Russell’s remark about marriage was a proposal. He joked that they could discuss it later, and they continued with the award presentation.

The exchange was staged, not a real proposal. Russell said some viewers believed the moment was genuine, but described the proposal as completely made up.
How did they come up with the routine?
Russell said the pair disliked the routine they had been given and decided to write their own. They worked it out together in the shower as they prepared to leave for the ceremony, about 20 minutes before they went, according to his 2026 Entertainment Weekly interview.

— Kurt Russell, speaking to Entertainment Weekly
Why did the change surprise people?
They did not tell event staff about the change before performing it. That meant the audience saw a spontaneous-sounding exchange whose apparent sincerity helped some people take it for a real proposal. Russell’s account is the basis for the details of how the couple prepared and kept their version quiet.
