Kate Nash said she started her “Butts for Tour Buses” campaign in November 2024 because the cost of touring was putting her finances under pressure. The singer-songwriter used a paid OnlyFans account to help keep her 9 Sad Symphonies tour on the road and pay her crew, while drawing attention to the economics facing working musicians.
Why did Kate Nash start an OnlyFans?
Nash told The Independent that the idea came after a blunt conversation with her accountant about the cost of touring. “Basically they told me that these tours are crushing me,” she said. She needed a way to continue touring without leaving her crew unpaid.
She described the account as both a source of income and a way to make the financial strain visible: “It’s literally funding my tour. Shining a light on my ass is shining a light on the issue [of funding] in the music industry.” The campaign’s deliberately provocative name turned that point into a slogan: subscribers’ payments could help cover the buses and other expenses required to tour.
What did the campaign reportedly pay for?
In a December 19, 2024 interview with Rolling Stone Australia, Nash said her OnlyFans page had funded her ongoing 9 Sad Symphonies UK and European tour. She said her financial problems were “solved in seven days.” Those are Nash’s descriptions of the outcome; the interviews do not provide audited revenue or accounts.

She said touring expenses included travel, accommodation, food, promotion and crew. Nash estimated that production for each of her performances cost about $10,000, including backing musicians and stage crew, and possibly a sound engineer. That figure is her estimate for her own shows, not a standard cost for every tour or venue. Rolling Stone Australia reported that her subscription was $9.99 a month at the time of its 2024 interview; that historical price should not be taken as current account pricing.
What was Nash saying about the music business?
Nash presented her situation as part of a wider problem: an artist can have a substantial audience and still struggle to make a tour profitable. In the Rolling Stone Australia interview, she said she could tour internationally but was losing money on those tours. Her account challenges the assumption that a recognizable name or large fan base automatically makes live performances financially sustainable.

The Independent reported that a survey of almost 6,000 performers found around half of professional musicians earned less than £14,000 a year from music, while 53 percent relied on other income to sustain their careers. Those figures are reported by The Independent; the article passage does not identify the survey’s publisher or primary report.
Nash said she wanted other artists to know they were not alone, noting that some were cancelling tours because they could not afford to continue. She also said she wanted to reinvest in her work, preserve the live show and pay the people working on it. The Independent described the response to her campaign as “overwhelmingly supportive.”

What was her proposal for supporting grassroots venues?
Nash also argued that the live music economy needs support further down the venue ladder. In the Rolling Stone Australia interview, she proposed directing £1 from every stadium and arena ticket to grassroots venues. She estimated that the contribution could provide about £30 million a year to midsize and independent performance spaces. This was her proposal and estimate, not an enacted levy or money already collected.
The campaign therefore connected two related concerns: the immediate cash needed to keep one artist’s tour operating, and the broader question of how live music can support artists and venues outside the stadium circuit. OnlyFans was Nash’s chosen means of generating income for her tour; her interviews do not establish comparable audited totals for subscriptions, touring revenue, streaming income or other funding routes.
