Tales of the Shire is a released Hobbit life sim for players drawn to the quieter side of Middle-earth. You create a Hobbit and make a home in Bywater, where the everyday loop revolves around gardening, cooking, fishing, foraging, decorating, and helping the community grow. It launched on July 29, 2025, for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, according to Wētā Workshop.
What do you do in Tales of the Shire?
The game is built around settling into Hobbit life rather than following an action-adventure loop. Wētā Workshop describes the goal as helping Bywater grow toward official village status. Its listed activities include:
- Creating and customizing a Hobbit, then decorating a home with grid-free placement.
- Tending a garden, fishing, and foraging for ingredients.
- Cooking meals and inviting neighbors to share them.
- Trading with neighbors and building relationships.
The Steam listing also describes seasonal crops, changing weather, exploration, and club missions. These are the developer and storefront descriptions of the game’s features, not a guarantee that every activity has the same depth or variety.
Does it have an official Tolkien connection?
Yes. Tales of the Shire was developed by Wētā Workshop Game Studio and published by Fictions, which Wētā identifies as a Take-Two Interactive publishing label. Take-Two says Middle-earth Enterprises licensed the literary works of The Lord of the Rings and provided creative license for the game. It is therefore an officially licensed Tolkien game, not simply a life sim using a similar pastoral setting.

Is it a good fit for cozy-game and Tolkien fans?
The premise is a natural match for players who want a gentle Middle-earth setting and routine-based activities. The more useful question is whether the particular mix and pace work for you. Reviews differ: PC Gamer’s review praised cooking and foraging but noted limited activity variety and that the game is single-player. TechRadar’s review was more critical of pacing, plotlines, and character depth.

Those opinions point to the main trade-off. If the appeal is spending time in a Hobbit village and repeating a calm domestic routine, the premise may be enough to draw you in. If you need a broad range of activities, brisk pacing, or a substantial story and cast, the reviews suggest checking that expectation before buying. “Cozy” describes the intended mood; it does not mean every player will enjoy the execution.
