Catherine, Princess of Wales, attended the Wimbledon men’s singles final on Sunday, July 14, 2024, while receiving cancer treatment. The appearance has already taken place: she watched from the Royal Box with Princess Charlotte and her sister, Pippa Matthews, then presented the trophy to Carlos Alcaraz. Wimbledon described it as her second public appearance since she announced her treatment.

What happened at Wimbledon on July 14, 2024?

At the 137th Championships, Catherine attended Day 14—the men’s singles final—as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Wimbledon reported that she received a standing ovation in the Royal Box. She was joined by Princess Charlotte and Pippa Matthews.

Her attendance followed Kensington Palace’s confirmation that she planned to be there and present the trophy. At the time, it was a significant public appearance during her treatment, not an announcement of a broader return to work.

Why did she present the trophy?

Catherine became patron of the All England Club in 2016. The Royal Family says she regularly presents trophies at Wimbledon finals, making the presentation part of her patronage role. In 2024, she handed the gentlemen’s singles trophy to Carlos Alcaraz after he defeated Novak Djokovic. The final lasted four hours and 42 minutes, according to Wimbledon’s 2025 compendium, which records the 2024 match.

Was the appearance a return to public duties?

No. ITV reported that the Palace emphasized her attendance did not mean she was returning to a full schedule of public engagements. In a June 2024 update, Catherine said: “I am making good progress, but I am not out of the woods yet.” That was her own public description of treatment and recovery at the time, not a medical assessment.

What was known about her health at the time?

In January 2024, Kensington Palace said Catherine had undergone planned abdominal surgery and would recover at home, while asking for privacy around personal medical information. In March, she announced that she was receiving cancer treatment. Wimbledon’s account of the final described her appearance in the context of that announcement. The public statements do not establish a connection between the January surgery and her cancer diagnosis, and no further medical details should be inferred.

How does this differ from later updates?

The July 2024 account should be kept separate from later developments. An Associated Press report in 2026 said Catherine’s cancer was in remission and that her office described a gradual return to public engagements. That later update does not change what was publicly known about her treatment or schedule at the time of the Wimbledon final.
