When she spoke to WLEX, she said she expected to lose both arms below the elbows as well. The report does not establish whether those procedures later took place or describe her subsequent recovery.
What happened to Cindy Mullins
The Guardian’s Dec. 31, 2023 report, later modified Nov. 8, 2024, recounts what Mullins told WLEX. She had been dealing with a kidney stone in the weeks before the Christmas and New Year holidays and received treatment. The stone subsequently caused an infection, and she became septic. After being rushed to hospital and sedated for days, she woke to learn that her legs had been amputated.
As The Guardian quoted her WLEX interview, Mullins said: “I’ve lost my legs from the knees down bilaterally, and I’m going to lose my arms probably below the elbow bilaterally.” She also said, “I’m just so happy to be alive.” The report said she was preparing for rehabilitation, physical therapy and prosthetics.
Mullins was a nurse who had worked at the same hospital for nearly two decades. She described the crisis’s effect on her husband and two sons and expressed gratitude for support from her community. The Guardian also quoted her recalling a doctor she had worked with: “This is what they had to do to save your life – this is what’s happened.” The report does not name that doctor or independently document the clinical decisions behind her care.

Can a kidney stone infection cause sepsis?
A kidney stone does not inevitably cause an infection or sepsis. In Mullins’s reported case, the sequence was a kidney stone, a subsequent infection and sepsis, as described by The Guardian from her WLEX interview. The report does not provide medical records or further clinical details, so it cannot establish the precise mechanism of her illness or amputations.
The CDC defines sepsis as the body’s extreme response to infection and describes it as a life-threatening medical emergency. Infections leading to sepsis often begin in the urinary tract, though they can also start in the gastrointestinal tract, lungs or skin. Without rapid treatment, sepsis can cause tissue damage, organ failure or death. These general facts provide context for the report; they are not a diagnosis or a clinical explanation of Mullins’s individual case. CDC: About Sepsis

What are the signs of sepsis?
CDC lists possible signs that include fever or feeling very cold, confusion, shortness of breath, clammy or sweaty skin, extreme pain, and a high heart rate or weak pulse. Symptoms can vary. If sepsis is suspected, seek immediate medical evaluation and treatment rather than waiting to see whether symptoms pass. Only a healthcare professional can assess an individual’s condition. What is known about sepsis recovery and Mullins’s later outcome?
The CDC says rehabilitation after sepsis often starts in hospital and may gradually rebuild movement and daily activities. Its recovery guidance lists amputation among possible long-term effects and advises survivors to work with a healthcare provider on a suitable rehabilitation plan and safe activities. The available reporting does not establish whether her anticipated arm amputations occurred or document her later recovery, so her current status should not be inferred from that account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How widespread is sepsis?
In a 2022 consumer brochure, the CDC estimated that about 1.7 million U.S. adults develop sepsis each year. The same brochure says at least 350,000 adults who develop sepsis die during hospitalization or are discharged to hospice. These are broad U.S. figures, not statistics about kidney stones, urinary infections specifically, or the likelihood of amputation after infection. The brochure does not quantify the probability of limb loss in a case like Mullins’s. CDC 2022 consumer brochure
