What happened during the halftime show?
On February 9, 2025, during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime performance at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, cast member Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu displayed a flag referring to Sudan and Gaza, then ran across the field before being apprehended. Louisiana State Police later described it as a Sudanese flag bearing the words “Sudan and Free Gaza.” The agency said Nantambu was authorized to be on the field as an extra performer, but not to demonstrate in that way. Louisiana State Police’s June 26 announcement described the flag and the investigation.
Was the protester initially charged?
No. On February 10, 2025, New Orleans police said Nantambu had been detained and ejected from the stadium, but that no arrest had been made and no summons issued. That was the immediate police response, not the final status of the case. The Guardian’s report from February 10 recorded the department’s statement.
Why was he charged months later?
Louisiana State Police subsequently investigated the disturbance and obtained an arrest warrant through Orleans Parish Criminal District Court. On June 26, 2025, the agency announced that Nantambu had surrendered with his attorney and was booked on two counts: resisting an officer and disturbing the peace by interruption of a lawful assembly. The state police announcement said its investigation was ongoing at that time. The agency’s announcement provides the later procedural update.

What was the court verdict?
An Associated Press report in May 2026 said Chief Judge Juana Marine-Lombard found Nantambu guilty of misdemeanor resisting an officer and not guilty of the disturbing-the-peace charge. The reported guilty finding was for resisting an officer; it was not a conviction for waving the flag. The Associated Press report said sentencing was scheduled for June 1, 2026. The available reporting does not establish whether the hearing took place or what sentence or final disposition followed.

The NFL said Nantambu would be banned for life from all league stadiums and events, according to The Guardian’s February 2025 report. That league decision is distinct from the criminal charges and court verdict: a venue or event ban is not a court sentence.
