He also explained why he does not resent “Mr. Brightside”: he sees the hit as something that now exists beyond its writer.
What Flowers said about faith and his time away from church
Flowers described himself as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly called the Mormon church. Looking back on a period when church life and the rock lifestyle felt at odds, he told DeSantis, “I never stopped believing, I just had a little detour for a little while.” He said he felt he had to experience that lifestyle to be authentic and taken seriously. AOL/People’s September 2, 2026 interview presents these as Flowers’s reflections on his own life, not as a general account of Latter-day Saint belief or musicians’ lives.
He said marriage in 2005 and becoming a father changed his choices. After his first son was born, Flowers said, he became more active in church and stopped smoking and drinking. Those details are his retrospective account; the interview does not independently document his private behavior or establish his current routine.
Why he says he is not sick of “Mr. Brightside”
Asked about the song’s enduring familiarity, Flowers recalled hearing other artists say that a hit no longer felt like theirs. His own perspective is different: “I don’t think of myself as being the person to have written it, it’s just this thing that exists and it’s incredible.” That is the explanation behind the interview’s framing that he is not sick of the song—not a claim that he has never had complicated feelings about its success.

“Mr. Brightside” appeared on The Killers’ 2004 debut album, Hot Fuss. Flowers’s comment describes how he relates to the song’s life beyond him; it does not explain the song’s subject or establish that it is religious.
How his other comments connect faith and music
Flowers has spoken more explicitly about faith in connection with other songs. These remarks help place the 2026 interview in context, but they should not be read as interpretations of “Mr. Brightside.”

Earlier statements about belief and church
In a 2018 CBS News profile, Flowers said, “I don’t go to church because I got nothing better to do on Sundays; I really believe it!” He also said he did not know what his life would be like without the church and answered “For sure” when asked whether it had saved him. Those are statements from that interview, not confirmation of his present-day church practice.
Faith in songs other than “Mr. Brightside”
A 2021 LDS Living report on an interview with religious studies professor Patrick Mason described Flowers connecting family religious study and faith to Imploding the Mirage. Flowers said he sometimes saw the album artwork as Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother, and at other times as a possible image of himself and his wife. The report also links “Fire and Bone” to the prodigal son parable and describes “My God” as celebrating his wife’s overcoming trials; these are interpretations attributed to Flowers through that report.

In a May 2025 MusicRadar retrospective, Flowers discussed “All These Things That I’ve Done” and the uncertainty he felt as a religious person anticipating rock success. He called the chorus “a prayer” and said, “I’m speaking to God in the chorus. I want to know I’m going to be okay.” MusicRadar draws on earlier interviews and podcast remarks; the comments concern that song, not “Mr. Brightside.”

In an October 2024 interview with The Current, Flowers reflected on returning to Hot Fuss for its 20th anniversary. He said about five of the album’s songs were already regular parts of the band’s set, while others felt less familiar. Revisiting the latter brought back memories of the young band and its early days. The Current also discussed The Killers’ Las Vegas residency and “Bright Lights” that year, placing the anniversary reflection in its own moment rather than replacing Flowers’s later, direct comments about “Mr. Brightside.”
