Lily Gladstone won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for playing Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon. The win made her the first Indigenous winner of the Golden Globes’ best-actress drama category, a milestone she connected in her acceptance speech to Native representation and storytelling.
Which Golden Globe did Lily Gladstone win?
At the 81st Golden Globe Awards on January 7, 2024, Gladstone received the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. The official Golden Globes results list her name alongside Killers of the Flower Moon.
Why was the win historic?
The Golden Globes and the Associated Press described Gladstone as the first Indigenous winner of the best-actress category. More precisely, the milestone was the first Indigenous win in the Golden Globes’ best-actress drama category. It is a record for that award category, not a claim about every acting category or every awards organization.
Who did Gladstone play in Killers of the Flower Moon?
Gladstone played Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman whose family is caught up in the violence against Osage people in Oklahoma. The film portrays how Osage people were targeted for headrights connected to oil-rich land, as the AP explains in its report on the win and film.

“This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid out there who has a dream, who is seeing themselves represented and our stories told – by ourselves, in our own words – with tremendous allies and tremendous trust from and with each other.”
Gladstone is Blackfeet; Mollie Burkhart, the character she portrayed, is Osage. They are distinct peoples, and Gladstone’s speech about her own language and identity should not be confused with Burkhart’s Osage identity.
