On 14 January 2025, Catherine, Princess of Wales, said she was “in remission” from cancer and remained focused on recovery. She made the announcement after visiting the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, where she had received treatment. Her statement did not say she was cured, and public reports did not identify her cancer type.

What Catherine announced

In a statement released on 14 January 2025, Catherine said, “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery.” The update was her first official health statement since she said in September 2024 that she had completed chemotherapy, according to The Associated Press.

She also reflected on the adjustment after treatment: “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.” This was her personal account, not medical guidance.

Where she made the announcement

Catherine shared the update after visiting the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, where she had received treatment. She met patients and staff, described her own care as “exceptional,” and thanked the teams who had supported her and Prince William through treatment and recovery, as reported by ITV News.

The visit also marked the announcement that Catherine and Prince William had become joint patrons of the Royal Marsden. The hospital trust’s chief executive, Dame Cally Palmer, welcomed the patronage and said it would help draw attention to the work of staff.

What is—and is not—known about her cancer

The public reports reviewed did not identify Catherine’s cancer type, and they do not establish its stage. She had previously said she completed chemotherapy in September 2024; ITV described it as preventative chemotherapy. No further details about her diagnosis, treatment regimen, or prognosis were provided in those reports.

“In remission” is the status Catherine used. It should not be rewritten as “cured”: remission does not necessarily mean that cancer has been cured, as AP explains.

What she said about returning to normal

During the hospital visit, Catherine spoke with patients about the difficulty of adjusting after treatment. The Guardian reported her saying: “Sometimes from the outside we all think you’ve finished treatment and you go back to things. But it’s hard to get back to normal.” She also told a patient, “It’s really tough. It’s such a shock. Everyone said to me please keep a positive mindset, it makes such a difference.” These were personal remarks about her experience, not a description of what every patient should expect.

The announcement was made on 14 January 2025; it is not, by itself, a later update on her health.
