Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 reached No. 1 among U.S. streaming movies in a Nielsen-reported week at the start of 2025, with 753 million minutes viewed across Max and Netflix. The surge was real, but short-lived in the available chart reports: in a later week, the film ranked No. 8 with 167 million minutes viewed.
What the streaming success means
Yahoo Entertainment’s reports of Nielsen streaming ratings put Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 at No. 1 among streaming movies in the week reported January 30, 2025. The measured total was 753 million minutes viewed across Max and Netflix. Yahoo Entertainment’s report describes a weekly chart result, not a count of individual viewers or a measure of lifetime performance.
In the week reported February 13, the film was No. 8, with 167 million minutes viewed, according to another Yahoo report of Nielsen’s ratings. That later chart shows the initial attention had eased. These figures cover Nielsen-measured U.S. TV streaming; they do not establish global viewing, viewing on every device, or the film’s streaming profitability.
How Horizon moved from theaters to streaming
Costner’s 2024 Western opened in U.S. theaters on June 28, 2024. Box Office Mojo’s weekly listing recorded $24,587,739 in domestic grosses through July 11, 2024—a partial-to-date figure, not the film’s final theatrical gross. Box Office Mojo’s listing provides the dated figure.

Max announced that the film would debut exclusively on its service on August 23, 2024. The announcement described a story set amid westward expansion and spanning the Civil War years, 1861–1865. Max’s announcement gives the streaming date and synopsis. Prime Video’s title page lists Costner as director and gives the film’s runtime as 2 hours 53 minutes. See the Prime Video title page.
The release sequence matters: the 2025 chart result came months after the theatrical opening and subscription-streaming debut. It is evidence of a later burst of U.S. viewing, not proof that the movie sustained a chart-leading run from its initial release.

Why Chapter 2’s planned opening was delayed
Chapter 2 had been scheduled to open theatrically on August 16, 2024. A New Line Cinema spokesperson told ABC News the date was being moved to give audiences more time to discover Chapter 1, including through PVOD and Max. ABC News reported the explanation at the time. That statement explains the contemporaneous rationale for the postponement; it does not establish the sequel’s later release status.

What the viewing figures do—and do not—tell you
- They measure minutes, not people. The 753 million and 167 million figures are viewing-time totals, not unique-viewer counts. They cannot answer exactly how many people watched.
- They describe specific weeks. The No. 1 and No. 8 positions refer to the reported weeks of January 30 and February 13, 2025, respectively—not an all-time ranking.
- They are U.S. TV-streaming measurements. They do not represent worldwide consumption or all viewing devices.
- They do not show profit. The available chart reports establish attention and minutes viewed, not subscription revenue, licensing returns, or profitability.
