Costner’s tribute to James Earl Jones
Costner’s message, reported as an Instagram tribute and reproduced in full by Country Living, begins: “Just hearing the news of James Earl Jones’s passing.” He then writes:

“That booming voice. That quiet strength. The kindness that he radiated. So much can be said about his legacy, so I’ll just say how thankful I am that part of it includes Field of Dreams. If you’ve seen it, you know that this movie wouldn’t be the same with anyone else in his role. Only he could bring that kind of magic to a movie about baseball and a corn field in Iowa. I’m grateful to have been a witness to him making that magic happen. Rest in peace, friend.”
ABC News also quoted Costner’s closing words, “Rest in peace, friend,” in its September 9, 2024, report.

How Jones and Costner were connected
Jones played Terrence Mann in Field of Dreams (1989), alongside Costner. Costner’s tribute points to the specific quality Jones brought to the role: a commanding voice paired with quiet strength, warmth and an unmistakable presence in a story about baseball and an Iowa cornfield.
The film’s place in baseball culture continued beyond its release. The National Baseball Hall of Fame hosted a 15th-anniversary salute to Field of Dreams on April 17, 2004, and later recalled Jones’s visit in its account, “Remembering James Earl Jones’ Hall of Fame visit.”

What was reported about Jones’s death
ABC News reported that Jones died on September 9, 2024, at his home in Dutchess County, New York, surrounded by family. The report said he was 93 and attributed the death details to his representative.
