Kevin Hart discussed his painful early recovery from back surgery and rehabilitation after his September 2019 car crash during The Joe Rogan Experience episode 1480, released May 25, 2020. He described needing help with basic movement and said the experience changed how he thought about time with his family.
Which Joe Rogan interview covered Hart’s recovery?
Hart talked about the crash and recovery on The Joe Rogan Experience #1480, released May 25, 2020. The official JRE Clips excerpt is from that episode, and its transcript includes the recovery discussion. Hart had appeared on the show earlier, in episode #1278 in April 2019, before the crash; that is not the interview in which he recounted his recovery.
What happened in the crash?
CBS News reported that the crash occurred on September 1, 2019, near Malibu. The driver, Jared Black, turned onto Mulholland Highway and lost control of Hart’s 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. Hart, Black and passenger Rebecca Broxterman were reported seriously injured. CBS News’ report also described Hart’s later recovery video.
What did Hart say about the recovery?
On Rogan’s show, Hart described back surgery and a difficult initial period marked by pain, restricted movement and dependence on other people. He said physical therapy began after he left the hospital and spoke about gradually getting back to movement. Global News reported that Hart said it took him about two and a half weeks to walk without a walker. That was his account of his own recovery, not a general timetable for healing after a back injury. How did Hart’s recovery unfold publicly?
CBS News reported that Hart was released from the hospital 10 days after the crash. An October 2019 recovery video showed him doing physical therapy and aquatic exercise while wearing a back brace. In the video, Hart reflected on how little control a person can have over events, saying: “No matter how much you think you’re in control, you’re not in control. At the end of the day, it can all be over, man.” CBS News reported that line on October 30, 2019.
Why did Hart call the crash a turning point?
Hart said the experience shifted his priorities and made him want to spend more time with his family. Recalling his return home, he told Rogan: “My biggest cry in life came from the first day that I came home from the hospital because I never had to see that house again.” Global News quoted him in its May 2020 report.
