Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce from Brandon Blackstock on June 4, 2020. The Associated Press reports that their divorce was finalized in 2022. Montana proceedings and separate disputes over management commissions continued afterward, but they were not the date the marriage first ended.
Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock’s relationship and divorce timeline
- October 2013 — They married. The Associated Press reports that Clarkson and Blackstock married that month. Associated Press
- June 4, 2020 — Clarkson filed for divorce. Women’s Health gives that filing date and says she cited irreconcilable differences; the Associated Press independently confirms the filing occurred in 2020. Women’s Health · Associated Press
- November 2020 — A custody order was reported. Life & Style reported that Clarkson received primary custody and that the order set parenting time for Blackstock. This is a report about an order at that time, not confirmation of the family’s current arrangements. Life & Style
- April 2021 — The parties signed a property settlement agreement. A Montana Supreme Court appellate filing says they reached the agreement through mediation while parenting issues remained unresolved. That is the filing’s account of the Montana proceeding. Montana Supreme Court filing
- 2022 — The divorce was finalized. The Associated Press reports that the divorce was finalized in 2022. Life & Style places a final settlement in March 2022; financial terms reported by outlets should not be treated as confirmed terms of a final court order without the primary document. Associated Press · Life & Style
- March 2024 — Montana filings describe a later decree and disputes. Appellate filings refer to a March 2024 decree and raise issues involving property appraisal and the absence of a final parenting plan. These filings concern later Montana proceedings; they do not change the Associated Press account that the divorce was finalized in 2022. Montana Supreme Court filing · Montana Supreme Court filing
- 2024 — Separate commission lawsuits were settled. The Associated Press reports that Clarkson and Blackstock agreed to settle lawsuits over commissions allegedly overcharged while he was her manager. That dispute was distinct from the divorce settlement. Associated Press
- August 2025 — Blackstock’s death was reported. The Associated Press reported that he died of cancer at age 48. A representative for his family said he had battled cancer for more than three years. His death is a later biographical event, not a divorce milestone. Associated Press
Why some timelines mention 2024
The apparent discrepancy comes from different proceedings being grouped together. The Associated Press dates the finalization of the divorce to 2022. Montana appellate filings describe a March 2024 decree and later disputes concerning property valuation and parenting-plan procedure. Separately, the Associated Press reports a 2024 settlement of commission-related lawsuits. Neither later matter should be described as the date Clarkson and Blackstock first divorced.
What is known about custody
Life & Style reported in November 2020 that Clarkson had primary custody under an order that also set parenting time for Blackstock. The Montana appellate filing says a final parenting plan was not attached to the March 2024 decree. The available reporting and filings do not establish the family’s current private parenting schedule.
What the timeline does not establish about settlement amounts
The sources cited here do not include a primary copy of the final settlement order with its financial terms. Figures reported by entertainment outlets should therefore be attributed to those outlets, not presented as verified terms of the final settlement; interim support orders should not be mistaken for the final agreement.
