Keanu Reeves is the standout in Good Fortune because Gabriel, his well-meaning but inept angel, turns the film’s wealth-swap premise into comedy: he is earnest, awkward and profoundly out of his depth. Variety explicitly called Reeves “this movie’s MVP,” a critic’s judgment rather than a measurable audience consensus. The performance also serves Aziz Ansari’s story about a struggling gig worker, a wealthy executive and the limits of money as a solution to hardship.
What Reeves does in Good Fortune
Reeves plays Gabriel, an angel who watches Arj, a struggling Los Angeles gig worker played by Aziz Ansari. Gabriel intervenes in Arj’s life to show him that money cannot solve all his problems. His solution involves temporarily swapping Arj’s circumstances with those of Jeff, a wealthy tech executive played by Seth Rogen. Arj enjoys his new wealth and resists going back.
The setup gives Reeves a role built around a mismatch: Gabriel means to help, but he does not understand the human consequences of his choices. Variety describes him as overstepping his duties and emphasizes the comic contrast between the angel’s blank-stare innocence and the increasingly human situation he has created. The Associated Press likewise characterizes Reeves’ angel as sweet but mistake-prone.
Why the performance stands out
Gabriel’s innocence becomes comic friction
Reeves plays Gabriel as earnest and awkward rather than as a knowing observer of human problems. The character’s good intentions do not spare Arj from the consequences of his intervention; instead, Gabriel’s limited understanding makes the predicament funnier. Variety praised Reeves’ “amusingly stiff” approach and called him the film’s MVP.

Ansari shaped the part around Reeves
Ansari told TheWrap that he began writing Gabriel with Reeves’ comedy in mind, including his performances in Bill & Ted, then adjusted the character after Reeves joined the film. He was drawn to what he described as Reeves’ “otherworldly” quality. In a separate interview, Ansari said they worked on the character together and rehearsed extensively to tailor the part to Reeves’ comic strengths. Ansari summed up the fit this way: “He’s so funny playing a guy that’s very sweet and innocent, but kind of dumb and it just felt perfect for this part.”
How Gabriel connects the comedy to the film’s ideas
Good Fortune is Aziz Ansari’s feature directorial debut. Its central contrast—Arj struggling to get by as a gig worker and Jeff living with great wealth—lets the angel comedy address a serious question: what does money change, and what can it not fix?

Ansari told Moviefone, “The goal with the movie was to do a film that explored those things in a funny way.” He was referring to wealth disparity and social conditions he had observed while living in Los Angeles. Variety critic Peter Debruge reads the film as “a working-class critique of contemporary capitalism,” particularly the side hustles people juggle to make ends meet. That is the critic’s interpretation, not an official genre label.
Gabriel is the hinge between those ideas and the comedy. His intervention treats a change in financial circumstances as a lesson, but Arj’s response complicates that plan: he likes being wealthy and does not want to return to his old life. The clash exposes how little Gabriel understands about what money means in practice, while giving Reeves room to play the angel’s earnest confusion.

Where to watch or find Good Fortune
Lionsgate lists the U.S. theatrical release date as October 17, 2025. A November 2025 Moviefone interview reported that the film became available on premium digital on November 7, with Blu-ray, DVD and an Amazon-exclusive 4K UHD combo pack scheduled for December 9, 2025. Amazon’s listing currently shows UHD rental and purchase options as well as Blu-ray and DVD formats. Availability and editions vary by territory and can change; check the current listing for the options available to you.
In that interview, Ansari said he made a commentary track and expected the home-media release to include bloopers and behind-the-scenes material. The interview reports his expectation; check the specific edition’s listing to confirm which extras it contains.
