Before her DUI sentencing, Karen Huger completed a 28-day stay at a Florida treatment center. Her lawyer said the program addressed alcohol abuse, overreliance on antidepressants and trauma. It did not change the jury’s verdict or resolve the case: Huger was sentenced on February 26, 2025, to two years, with one year suspended.
What change did Karen Huger make before sentencing?
Huger entered a 28-day treatment program in Florida ahead of her sentencing in Montgomery County, Maryland. Her attorney, David Martella, described the program as addressing alcohol abuse, overreliance on antidepressants and trauma. Those details were attributed to her lawyer, rather than presented as independent clinical findings.
Huger also addressed the decision in a message to her castmates, saying, “I am going away to a treatment center to address taking anti-depressants and drinking.” Martella said she felt she was “the healthiest she has been in several years” because of her recovery work. Both statements were reported by Bravo.
Why was her DUI sentencing delayed?
Huger’s sentencing had initially been scheduled for January 29, 2025, but the court moved it to February 26. The treatment stay took place before the rescheduled hearing; the available accounts do not say that treatment caused the postponement. The Washington Post’s February 22 report covered the new date and her planned sentencing.

What happened in the DUI case?
On March 19, 2024, Huger crashed her vehicle in Potomac, Maryland, and was arrested. The Washington Post reported that the car crossed a median, struck a pedestrian crossing sign, then left the road and hit another sign. On December 19, a Montgomery County jury found her guilty of DUI-related and other driving offenses. Bravo reported that she was found guilty on seven charges, except reckless driving.
Before sentencing, prosecutors sought six months in jail. Huger’s defense asked the court to emphasize rehabilitation and impose no incarceration. The judge ultimately ordered a custodial term as well as a suspended portion.

How much jail time did Karen Huger get?
On February 26, 2025, the court sentenced Huger to two years, with one year suspended, leaving one year to serve. ABC News also reported five years of probation, $2,900 in fines and a one-year driving restriction after release. A probation violation could lead to the suspended year being served, according to ABC News’s account of the sentencing.
Judge Terrence J. McGann said, “Her treatment will help her rehabilitate herself — if she sincerely wants help.” Huger described the crash in court as a “mirror of brutal clarity,” ABC News reported. The judge’s comment reflected the treatment’s place in the sentencing discussion; it did not erase the conviction or the sentence.

When was Huger released?
In September 2025, The Washington Post reported that Huger had been released after serving about six months. The report attributed the earlier-than-one-year release to credits for good behavior and jail programs. It also reported a one-year driving prohibition after release and an alcohol-reading ignition interlock requirement. These are later developments, distinct from the sentence imposed at the February hearing. The Washington Post reported the release on September 2, 2025.
