It was her first public message since January surgery, but it was not a detailed medical update. The photograph was later withdrawn by news agencies over concerns that it appeared altered, and Catherine apologized the next day for confusion.
What was Kate Middleton’s Mother’s Day photo?
The Prince and Princess of Wales’s social accounts posted the photograph on March 10, 2024, showing Catherine with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The Guardian reported that Kensington Palace said Prince William had taken it in Windsor earlier that week. The image was described as the first official photograph of Catherine after her operation.
The accompanying message read: “Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. C.” The Guardian reproduced the message in its March 10 report, updated March 11.
What was known about her recovery at the time?
In January 2024, Kensington Palace said Catherine had undergone planned abdominal surgery and would recover away from official duties. The Guardian reported that the operation took place on January 16 and that she left hospital on January 29. The palace said then that the surgery was not cancer-related and that Catherine wished to keep her personal medical information private. The Mother’s Day post offered thanks for support received over the preceding two months; it did not give further information about her condition or treatment.
Why was Kate’s Mother’s Day photo withdrawn?
On March 11, the Associated Press, Reuters, AFP, and other news agencies withdrew the photograph from distribution after raising concerns that it appeared altered. The agencies’ decisions reflected concerns about the image they had received; they do not, by themselves, establish who changed particular parts of it or why. What did Catherine say about the image?
On March 11, Catherine apologized for the confusion caused by the family photograph. ITV reported her statement: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing.” ITV also reported that Kensington Palace would not reissue the unedited original.
