Rock is part of the record and her musical story, but the album also reaches into pop, Americana, disco, folk, synth, and soul. Hudson has said she waited until she could stop giving other people’s opinions so much weight—and until making music felt necessary in its own right.
Why Hudson decided to release music now
Music had been part of Hudson’s life long before Glorious. What changed was her willingness to put her own songs in public. In a CBS News interview on April 28, 2024, she explained the shift simply: “Because I just don’t care anymore about what people think, probably.” She had worried that pursuing music might affect her film career, and said it had not felt right to release her work earlier.
The pandemic sharpened the question of what she wanted the next half of her life to look like artistically. Hudson told the Associated Press that not making an album would have been a great regret. “I would die without music,” she said. She wrote 26 songs for the project; 12 were selected for the album.
That sense of personal necessity also came through in her conversation with Vogue: “I wasn’t doing this for any reason other than it felt like I just had to do it.” She has said she hopes to keep writing music.

What Glorious sounds like
Glorious is not presented by Hudson as a record belonging to one genre. Apple Music describes its foundation as throwback pop-rock. Vogue characterizes it as a blend of Americana, pop, disco, and vintage rock ’n’ roll, while the Associated Press hears folk, rock, synth, soulful ballads, and big pop songs. Those descriptions suggest a record that moves between styles rather than staying within a strict rock lane.
Hudson put the point directly to the Associated Press: “My influences move,” and “I didn’t want to be pigeonholed into a genre.” Rock matters to the album, but calling it exclusively a rock album would leave out much of the sound she and those outlets describe.

Why Almost Famous is part of the story
Hudson’s breakout role as Penny Lane in Almost Famous connected her publicly with a film that celebrates the world of rock ’n’ roll. In her CBS interview, when asked how fitting it was that her breakout role had been in a love letter to rock, she replied, “It kind of makes sense,” then added, “Probably a reason why Cameron hired me.”
That exchange makes the film a natural piece of context for her musical profile, not proof that the role dictated her musical influences. Hudson’s own description of Glorious emphasizes a range of sounds and a desire not to be confined to one genre.

How the album came together
Linda Perry helped turn Hudson’s singing into a recording project. The Recording Academy reported that Perry heard her sing during a virtual school program and brought her into a studio session. Hudson also worked with Johan Carlsson and Danny Fujikawa; Fujikawa is identified among the collaborators in coverage by ABC News and Vogue.
The final album, released May 17, 2024, contains 12 songs and runs 43 minutes according to Apple Music’s listing. Its songs include “Gonna Find Out,” “Live Forever,” “Talk About Love,” and “Glorious.” ABC News also reported tracks including “The Nineties,” “Love Ain’t Easy,” “Romeo,” “Never Made a Moment,” “Lying to Myself,” “Not Easy to Know,” and “Touch the Light.”
