What is Kaiju No. 8 about?
The anime adapts Naoya Matsumoto’s manga, which began serialization on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ in July 2020. Its central character, Kafka Hibino, once hoped to join Japan’s Defense Force, which fights the country’s frequent kaiju attacks. Instead, he works in specialized cleanup—until a mysterious organism transforms him and the Defense Force identifies him as Kaiju No. 8. Shueisha’s volume 1 description
Production I.G’s 2022 announcement said the manga had sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, including digital editions, at that time, when eight collected volumes had been published. The official anime site’s English presentation displays a later figure of more than 18 million copies in circulation. These are figures from different dates and use different wording; they should not be treated as a directly comparable same-date count. Production I.G, December 20, 2022 · Official anime site
