Its best moments make that collision feel vivid. But a sprawling setup, uneven comic pacing and a story that leaves much unresolved keep the film from matching its visual ambition with consistent emotional pull.
What is Kalki 2898 AD about?
Written and directed by Nag Ashwin, the 2024 Telugu-language science-fiction action-adventure connects the Mahabharata figure Ashwatthama to a future in which he is cursed to live until he saves a divine incarnation. In 2898, bounty hunter Bhairava becomes entangled in the pursuit of Sum-80, also known as Sumati, while Supreme Yaskin rules from the Complex. That chase supplies the film’s immediate action; the Ashwatthama connection gives it the larger mythic purpose.
The ensemble includes Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan. At 2 hours 45 minutes, the film has room to establish a broad world and set up a continuing saga—but that scale also leaves a lot of story to carry. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film’s cast, Telugu-language classification and runtime.
Where does the film’s ambition pay off?
The strongest case for Kalki 2898 AD is the scale of its worldbuilding. Mythology and science fiction occupy the same frame, and the future feels designed to be explored rather than used as a bare backdrop for fights. Guardian critic Leslie Felperin describes its visual approach as an “Indofuturist” mix and praises its maximalist design; Shubhra Gupta’s Indian Express review likewise recognizes the film’s scale and ambition.

That fusion also gives the premise a useful dramatic shape. Ashwatthama’s ancient curse and the future savior story are not merely separate strands: their meeting organizes the dystopian chase and hints at a much larger conflict. Felperin calls the film “mostly a hoot,” praising its blend of Indian mythology, martial arts and melodramatic plot mechanics filtered through science fiction. The combination can be exuberant, especially when the film lets its spectacle and mythic stakes share the scene.
How strong is the Hollywood influence?
Reviewers have pointed to familiar genre touchstones, but those comparisons describe resemblance and cinematic vocabulary—not proof of copying. Gupta names Mad Max, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Blade Runner and Dune when discussing the film’s influences and visual references. Felperin compares its blend of genres to The Matrix and Mad Max.

Those analogies help explain why parts of the film may feel recognizable to viewers steeped in global fantasy and science-fiction cinema. They do not establish that the film borrowed from any one title, nor do they amount to a verified account of Nag Ashwin’s inspirations. The more distinctive idea is the attempt to bring this genre language into contact with Indian mythic material.
Why does the story feel less involving than it looks?
The main weakness is dramatic momentum. Gupta describes the first half as slow and stop-start, with a second half that becomes more active. The film is busy introducing characters, rules and future-saga possibilities, but those elements can crowd out a tight central line of feeling. Felperin also notes how much remains unresolved by the end—an understandable choice for a continuing saga, though it limits the satisfaction of this installment.

Gupta also criticizes the humor in the Hindi version she watched, while making clear that she cannot say whether the same problem applies to the Telugu or Tamil versions. She singles out Bujji as an exception. That qualification matters: the observation is about one version, not a blanket judgment on every language release. Still, where the jokes interrupt rather than deepen the action, tonal shifts add to the sense of a film struggling to settle into a steady rhythm.
How well does the ensemble work?
Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama is a standout for Gupta, whose review also says Kamal Haasan makes an impact despite limited screen time. Their presence gives the mythic conflict weight, even when the film’s many characters and celebrity cameos contribute to its sprawl. The balance is uneven: the ensemble can make the world feel populated, but not every figure receives enough room to sharpen the central drama.

Is Kalki 2898 AD worth watching?
If you enjoy large-scale science fiction, mythic premises and maximalist visual design, the film offers plenty to engage with. Its most appealing feature is the collision of a Mahabharata-linked story with an imagined future; its chief frustration is that the plot and pacing do not consistently turn that spectacle into emotional investment. It is an ambitious saga with memorable components, but not an equally compelling story from start to finish.
The critical response is mixed rather than unanimous. On its page snapshot accessed 8 October 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 76% Tomatometer from 38 reviews and an 86% Popcornmeter from 500+ verified ratings. These are changeable aggregator scores, not a substitute for the differences in judgment reflected in the reviews above.
