Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa was transferred from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru to Ballari prison on August 29, 2024. The move followed a photograph and purported video call from inside the Bengaluru prison that prompted allegations of preferential treatment; the reports explain the controversy, but do not establish that a court found the allegations proven.
What happened in the Ballari prison transfer?
On August 29, 2024, Darshan was moved from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru to Ballari prison. A Bengaluru court permitted the transfer after images and reports of contact from inside the Bengaluru facility drew public scrutiny. Contemporary coverage described the transfer as taking place amid the controversy. The Indian Express reported the transfer on August 29, 2024, as did The New Indian Express.
What prompted the controversy?
A circulated photograph was reported to show Darshan seated with other inmates, including a person described in reports as a rowdy sheeter. A purported video of Darshan speaking with someone by video call also surfaced. These reports prompted allegations that he was receiving preferential treatment while held in Bengaluru.
The distinction matters: the images and allegations explain why the transfer became an issue, but they are not, by themselves, proof of a judicial finding that Darshan received preferential treatment. The reported court action was authorization for a transfer; it should not be described as a finding of guilt or proof of the allegation.

How does the transfer relate to the Renukaswamy murder case?
Darshan is an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case. On August 14, 2025, the Supreme Court of India cancelled the bail granted to Darshan and other accused and directed that they be taken into custody. The Court expressly limited its observations to the bail issue and said they should not influence the trial on the merits. Its order therefore did not determine guilt.
In its judgment in The State of Karnataka vs. Sri Darshan Etc. Etc., the Supreme Court stated: “In a democracy governed by the rule of law, no individual is exempt from legal accountability by virtue of status or social capital.” Read the Supreme Court judgment dated August 14, 2025.

What is known about Darshan’s status now?
An Indian Express report updated September 23, 2026 says Darshan remains jailed. That report does not establish his exact prison location as of October 8, 2026, so the 2024 transfer to Ballari should not be taken as confirmation that he is still held there. The September 23, 2026 report concerns the Renukaswamy case and confirms that he remained jailed at that time.
