Kanye West showed a Yeezy Foam Runner prototype at Fast Company’s Innovation Festival on November 7, 2019. Contemporary reports described its foam as a mix of algae-derived material and petroleum-based EVA—not a shoe made entirely from algae. They did not establish that every later colorway used the same formula.
What did West unveil in 2019?
At Fast Company’s Innovation Festival on November 7, 2019, West presented a prototype identified in contemporary coverage as a Yeezy Foam Runner. Fast Company’s event report described the prototype as made in Atlanta and partly from algae-based foam. Futurism likewise identified it as a Foam Runner and described the material as a combination of algae-derived foam and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), a petroleum-based plastic.
That description applies to the prototype discussed in 2019. Futurism noted that it was unclear whether all future Foam Runners would use algae. The available reporting does not give an algae percentage or verify a universal formula across colorways.
What did the designers say about sustainability?
West described an ambition to build a supply chain around the material, saying, “We’re going to be farming and going seed to sole.” Yeezy head designer Steven Smith said, “Eco-concerns are intersecting with what we do.” Fast Company reported both remarks at the 2019 event.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are statements of intent, not measured environmental results. The reports do not provide an independently assessed lifecycle comparison, carbon or water-impact figures, or evidence that the prototype achieved the stated ambitions at scale.
How did the Foam Runner’s release and reported details vary?
The prototype unveiling preceded the public release. A 2021 court complaint by Yeezy-related entities states that the Foam Runner debuted publicly through Yeezy Supply on June 26, 2020, at an original retail price of $75. That is a historical statement in a legal filing, not a current price.

What can—and can’t—be said about the shoe today?
The strongest supported description is that the 2019 prototype was reported to use a blend of algae-derived foam and petroleum-based EVA. The sources do not establish the algae content of every production colorway, quantify environmental benefits, or verify current inventory, pricing, or an active official sales channel. Treat claims about a particular pair’s materials or origin as colorway-specific unless they are documented for that release.
